The Fire Child
The Fire Child | S. K. Tremayne
THE PERFECT HUSBAND. THE PERFECT STEPSON. THE PERFECT LIE? When Rachel marries dark, handsome David, everything seems to fall into place. Swept from single life in London to the beautiful Carnhallow House in Cornwall, she gains wealth, love, and an affectionate stepson, Jamie. But then Jamie's behavior changes, and Rachel's perfect life begins to unravel. He makes disturbing predictions, claiming to be haunted by the specter of his late mother - David's previous wife. Is this Jamie's way of punishing Rachel, or is he far more traumatized than she thought? As Rachel starts digging into the past, she begins to grow suspicious of her husband. Why is he so reluctant to discuss Jamie's outbursts? And what exactly happened to cause his ex-wife's untimely death, less than two years ago? As summer slips away and December looms, Rachel begins to fear there might be truth in Jamie's words: "You will be dead by Christmas."

I finished this last night. I was a great thriller without a thriller ending. It was a page turner.

Mirazzles I‘m glad you enjoyed it! It‘s on my list! I really enjoyed “The Ice Twins!” 5y

A slow story up until the middle. I thought about bailing, but I guess I'm glad I stuck it out. The ending was intense.

This week's library loot. THE FIRE CHILD caught my eye at the bookstore on Tuesday, but it didn't meet the criteria for my random book-buying project so I was pleased to see it at the library. The other two were impulse picks.

sudi Diary of a Tokyo Teen looks interesting 7y
xicanti @sudi I had a peek at it tonight, and the writing seems pretty rough at first glance. I hope the info'll be interesting enough to make up for it. 7y

So many books, so little time! Why can't I just get a job that pays me to read all day?

Spooky and atmospheric. Definitely a slow burner but involving enough that it keeps you reading. Looking forward to reading the other book by this author.

A spooky, psychological thriller in an almost empty, thousand year old castle on the Cornish coast. Nina, dead wife and mother, and the new wife and stepmother Rachel trying to settle in between the sorrow and ghosts of her husband David and stepson Jamie. What really happened to Nina Kerthen, and is she really coming back to haunt Carnhallow, like Jamie seems to be predicting? Or is Rachel going mad?

Intense and wonderful.

A good thriller is a white unicorn in a horse ranch. This unicorn is made of diamonds.

Just finished this, by the same author as The Ice Twins. Just as thrilling and claustrophobic and unreliable narrator-ish as the first novel. You can read my whole review over on wanderaven.com.

I wanted this book to be good but, as often happen when a writer try to repeat the success of his first novel,THE FIRE CHILD is a slow psycho thriller with an unrealistic ending that mock the pattern of THE ICE TWINS but is far from it. Only a couple of chilling scenes and way too much mine history.
