Underrated?? Really?? Its one of Arthur C. Clark's best known novels, and usually mentioned, along with 2001 and Childhood's End, when discussing Clarke's writing. Rendezvous with Rama isn't one of my favorite Clarke novels, but I don't think its underrated. That said, if anyone can do right by the book, its Denis Villeneuve.

The_Book_Ninja It‘s a superb book. Maybe the reputation of the follow-ups have diminished its solo standing 3mo
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja @RamsFan1963 Yeah, that's a weird statement, probably by a journalist for whom sci fi isn't a familiar genre. I hated Villeneuve's Blade Runner, but loved his Dune, so I'll have to cross my fingers. I wonder whether Hollywood can tolerate the ambiguous ending? I guess it'll be a multipart franchise. I've got Rama II and III on TBR - perhaps I should dust them off 🤔 3mo
swynn Yeah. I read the story and came to the conclusion that the author thinks "most underrated" means "longest-languishing in development hell." Which, I'm pretty sure it doesn't. 3mo

60/150 Maybe it's not fair, since my last two books were 5 🌟 reads, but this was pretty meh. I don't mind hard science science fiction, and I've enjoy several of Clarke's books, but I felt this lacked the sense of awe and wonder you would expect from the exploration of an alien spaceship. Also, I thought the ending left too much unanswered. 3 ⭐⭐⭐

The_Book_Ninja I quite enjoyed this book. There‘s about 3 or 4 sequels though which I‘ve never read. 2y

This book is an exercise in imagination. It's like sitting in an art class and listening to a teacher trying to inspire you before painting a picture. Everything is described but nothing is really concrete. It's a report for exploring an alien space craft and it's only for you to imagine what it was really like from the report. Hard sci-fi, no characters, messy pacing. Check out ep 40 of the Mind Duck Books podcast: http://bit.ly/3M5ZcbF

If you want a simple sci fi where a sciencey thing happens and people explore that idea, this is definitely one of those.

Simple and elegant science fiction. It‘s only significant drawback is it‘s association with a series of second rate coauthored sequels.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

Excellent for both hardcore SF fans as well as SF dabblers. Does not presume anything past high school memory of science (physics).

Great author demonstrating an undeniable capacity for imagination as well as a capacity to share the fruits of his imagination with a general, non-specialized audience:

1. Loved the Rama series.
2. Atari. We loved Pitfall. And we also had the infamous E.T. game. Also Tetris.
3. Duran Duran. Tears For Fears. A-ha. The Cure. R.E.M..Depeche Mode. Cyndi Lauper. Culture Club.
4. The Breakfast Club. E.T.. Gremlins. Short Circuit. Lots of schlocky horror movies.

CSeydel Omg - the ET game! We have found the one person who actually purchased the ET video game! 😆 7y

Two classic #setinspace books, great mysteries too. I must read the third and fourth book in the series to find out what was going on! #Marchinbooks

rosalita Good luck with the rest of the series. I absolutely love the first one, but I kind of regret marring that memory by reading the rest. Many people disagree with that, though! 7y
Andrew65 @rosalita Strangely I started with the second one - not realising there was an earlier one! Then I read the first one when I found out. 7y
rosalita @Andrew65 That‘s funny! I‘ll be interested in your view on the rest, then. Which of the first two did you like better? 7y

Andrew65 @rosalita I enjoyed the second one a lot, hence then searching out the first one. However on balance possibly liked the first one best but a few years between them. Will let you know what I think of the others when I get to them. 7y
Ardachy Gosh that takes me back. I was an avid reader of Clarke, Asimov and Heinlein in the last century. 7y
Andrew65 @Ardachy I particularly loved Asimov‘s books and fancy rereading some. Not heard of Heinlein so will need to check this out. Pleased to see I brought back some memories! 😊 7y

@Gezemice Didn‘t you just pick this read for your classics challenge. It‘s on sale today if you need to pick it up.👍

Andrew65 That's a good book. 7y
Gezemice Thanks for the shout-out! This one is in my husband's extensive sci-fi/fantasy collection, so I already have it. He suggested it. 7y

Finished the first of the books about Rama. Having now finished it, I very much enjoyed this book, but it has left me with more questions than answers! Need to quickly continue with the other Rama books to see if it answers the many questions it has left up in the air. #ScienceFiction

Time for some classic Science Fiction. On the commute today I started Rendezvous for Rama. Many years ago I read the second book in this mini series, but had never read how it all started. I felt it was time to rectify that! Interesting so far.

Special note for audiobook: the narrator is *really* easy to fall asleep to. He's perfectly good, just not exciting.

There was a forward that talked about Clarke not being big on character development. Yep. The people are most def just there to walk you through the big sweeping questions of the book. Which were really interesting! But... not *exciting*.

With those caveats, this is a great piece of SF.

In 2130, what at first seems to be a comet comes into our galaxy, but then starts acting demonstrably not like a comet. And it turns out to be our First Encounter. With an alien race that doesn't seem to be, um, there.
This was a good one, folks. Seat-edgy but without being too stressful, the characters are great, including Rama itself, and I really like Clarke's way of writing. Recommended, if you like this sort of thing.

I‘m not a big science fiction reader. In fact, I don‘t read it at all. But, I had to choose a book for the Popsugar Reading Challenge prompt “a science-fiction novel.” What to read? My hubby suggested this book, and he was spot-on.

If you‘re new to science fiction, I think this is a good first novel of the genre. It‘s highly readable, easy to wrap your head around, and doesn‘t contain a lot of scientific jargon that can be off-putting. 4/5⭐️

tpixie I just read another one of his books. It states that RwRami won the top three sci-fi fiction awards - HUGO, NEBULA & John W Campbell Award. 🥇 8y
PurpleyPumpkin @tpixie The awards are well-deserved imo. I haven't read any of his other books, but I'm intending to! 8y
tpixie Well - I'm old enough to have seen the movie 2001, a space odyssey and loved it. It may not hold up today- with our great CGI. I read at least two of those books in his series. Just finished Childhood's End. Very thought- provoking. 2015 there was a 3 part TV mini- series. I may have to find it to compare. Next book is totally different- for book club 8y
PurpleyPumpkin @tpixie Fishbowl sounds completely different! I'm going to stack that one and look forward to your review. 👍🏽 8y
