The Snack Thief
The Snack Thief | Andrea Camilleri
17 posts | 17 read | 8 to read
Never has Inspector Montalbano's character - a unique blend of humor, cynicism, compassion, earthiness, and love of good food - been more compelling than in Andrea Camilleri's third Montalbano novel, The Snack Thief. When an elderly man is stabbed to death in an elevator and a crewman on an Italian fishing trawler is machine-gunned by a Tunisian patrol boat off Sicily's coast, only Inspector Montalbano suspects a link between the two incidents. His investigation leads to the beautiful Karima, an impoverished house cleaner and sometime prostitute, whose young son steals other school children's mid-morning snacks. But Karima disappears, and the young snack thief's life - as well as Montalbano's - is endangered when the inspector exposes a viper's nest of government corruption and international intrigue. The Snack Thief is followed by the fourth Inspector Montalbano novel, The Voice of the Violin.

In the third book in Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano series, the urbane and perceptive Sicilian detective exposes a viper's nest of government corruption and international intrigue in a compelling new case. EadieB off Sicily's coast, only Montalbano suspects the link between the two incidents. EadieB This is the 3rd book in the Montalbano series by Andrea Camilleri. It is located in Sicily where wine, women and mystery are plenty. There are two mysteries going on and the link of these mysteries is seen early on by Montalbano. There are plenty of humorous situations happening with lots of twists and turns throughout the book. Montalbano comes to terms with fatherhood and the death of his father and a young boy on the run from killers. 1y
EadieB The relationship between Livia and Montalbano is also discussed. Lots of entertaining fun and if you love crime with mystery then you will love these books. 1y

ValerieAndBooks Like you, I'd say I read about the same amount -- but Litsy has put a lot of books on my radar (some I've managed to read from the ever-growing TBR list 😂 ). I joined the month before you did, but didn't actually post until about three months later 💖. 4y

Inspector Montalbano and fellow policeman were feigning inattention while questioning someone, but really they were behaving like cats.

Poe was determined to prevent us from packing this suitcase & leaving him behind.Clearly he was feigning sleep & keeping an eye on us!
Enjoying this series, especially since my husband has Sicilian relatives, thanks to the recommendation of @Andrew65

Andrew65 Great to hear you are enjoying them. 😊 4y

#fridayafternoon #foundbookmark
Busy week between work & the World Series. So have been neglecting Litsy. ☹️
I love when I come across something in a library book, which happened when I opened the tagged book.Pictured bookmark has no date on it but looks lovingly used. From a bookstore, Macintosh books and paper on Sanibel, Florida. Googled it & the bookstore still exists. ❤️📚

@TheSpineView #SeriesRead 5⭐ Oh my goodness, Montalbano may be changing! This was book 3 of the series and the Inspector may finally be *growing up* as a friend said he should. I love his descriptions of the food he loves, of his relationship with livia and everything about this book. If you want to immerse yourself in Sicily, read this series! Can't wait to listen to the next one!
@Andrew65 (thanks!)

Andrew65 Told you they grow on you and get better. 👍 Half tempted to start at the beginning again myself. 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 yes they most certainly do. I have the next book ready to listen to, but I have 2 other books I have to finish first and I really have to tell myself *no* because I want to be back in Sicily!! 5y

I #wanttotravel to Sicily. The beautiful panoramas and architecture in the Inspector Montalbano TV dramas have inspired me.
While I am saving my pennies I will have to read the Camilleri novels.

The third Montalbano book is another fantastic novel telling a fun tale seasoned with quirky individuals and Italian characteristics that make these books so unique. Loved it.

ValerieAndBooks I've seen Camilleri at the used bookstore. Your reviews make me intrigued! Should they be read in order?? 7y
myers85 @ValerieAndBooks I've read the first three in order but whilst they do have recurring characters and make light references to previous books you can pick them up at any point. Each novel is its own story so the narratives are continuous. I highly recommend! 7y
ValerieAndBooks Good to know, thanks! I have to admit I didn't pull them off for a closer look before because I had a jerk ex-boss with the same last name. Silly, I know! 7y

Camilleri uses some fantastic similies. I don't know if it's an Italian thing or just him, either way it makes the Montalbano novels very unique and fun!

I absolutely love the Montalbano novels. Started this one the other day and the detective's blunt remarks have made me laugh out loud several times already. Always a nice humorous escape to Italy.

This arrived in the post today. I love the Montalbano books. Fantastic mystery novels, filled with quirky characters whilst set in my favourite country. I always tend to eat extra Italian meals when reading these books!
