Dust Bowl Girls: The Inspiring Story of the Team That Barnstormed Its Way to Basketball Glory
Dust Bowl Girls: The Inspiring Story of the Team That Barnstormed Its Way to Basketball Glory | Lydia Reeder

A thrilling, cinematic story. I loved every minute I spent with these bold, daring women whose remarkable journey is the stuff of American legend. Karen Abbott, New York Times bestselling author of Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy The Boys in the Boat meets A League of Their Own in this true story of a Depression-era championship women s team. In the early 1930s, during the worst drought and financial depression in American history, Sam Babb began to dream. Like so many others, this charismatic Midwestern basketball coach wanted a reason to have hope. Traveling from farm to farm near the tiny Oklahoma college where he coached, Babb recruited talented, hardworking young women and offered them a chance at a better life: a free college education in exchange for playing on his basketball team, the Cardinals. Despite their fears of leaving home and the sacrifices that their families would face, the women joined the team. And as Babb coached the Cardinals, something extraordinary happened. These remarkable athletes found a passion for the game and a heartfelt loyalty to one another and their coach--and they began to win. Combining exhilarating sports writing and exceptional storytelling, Dust Bowl Girls takes readers on the Cardinals intense, improbable journey all the way to an epic showdown with the prevailing national champions, helmed by the legendary Babe Didrikson. Lydia Reeder captures a moment in history when female athletes faced intense scrutiny from influential figures in politics, education, and medicine who denounced women s sports as unhealthy and unladylike. At a time when a struggling nation was hungry for inspiration, this unlikely group of trailblazers achieved much more than a championship season."

A book club read, it was interesting and a great history lesson. I enjoyed the pictures of the women peppered throughout. I prefer historical fiction to actual history, and this could‘ve been a fun read but the style was very factual and somewhat boring. Women‘s basketball, all female sports really, owe these amazing women huge thanks for the role they had in advancing sports for women. Book #20 in 2024

Not a sports fan, so many of the technical details were lost on me. But I was inspired by the tenacity of these young women who paved the way for women in althetics. With the depression as a backdrop, this book read like a novel.

I really enjoyed this #nonfiction book about the Oklahoma Presbyterian College women‘s basketball team from the early 1930s. Great personal stories and some eye rolling about how people thought of women athletes. My grandma played college basketball in the late 1930s in Indiana so I felt a personal connection to the women in this book. #audiobook #nonfiction

I really liked this. Written in such a way that makes you think the author jumped in a time machine & traveled back in time to take notes because the details are so precise and vivid. Not dry at all. Reminded me a bit of A League of Their Own: Farm girls playing "men's" sports but still needing to prove they're still feminine lest they be judged too harshly by a (mostly) disapproving country. #womenshistorymonth

Reviewsbylola I‘ve seen this one and been curious. Sounds really good! 7y

I don‘t usually read sports books, but this looks like an interesting choice for the Litsy reading challenge! Has anyone read it?

Nothing like a good book, beautiful weather, and time with a beloved community.

To the Lighthouse (narrated by wonderful Juliet Stevenson), Dust Bowl Girls, or The Night Swimmer (narrated by Hilary Huber) ??

KarenUK Juliet Stevenson always 😍💕 8y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @KarenUK yeah. I kind of figured that eh Karen? It's a fairly short audio so I might go with that first and then maybe Hilary Huber's narration next. 😊 8y
