A wry, tender novel about an ordinary family facing extraordinary choices. Julia Alden has fallen deeply, unexpectedly in love. American obstetrician James is everything she didn't know she wanted--if only her teenage daughter, Gwen, didn't hate him so much. Uniting two households is never easy, but when Gwen turns for comfort to James's seventeen-year-old son, Nathan, the consequences will test her mother's loyalty and threaten all their fragile new happiness. This is a moving and powerful novel about the modern family: about starting over; about love, guilt, and generosity; about building something beautiful amid the mess and complexity of what came before. It is a story about standing by the ones we love, even while they make mistakes. We would give anything to make our children happy. But how much should they ask?

My first evening at home in what seems like weeks! Enjoying this slow exploration of a new relationship, attempting to unite two families, children threatening the new-found happiness of their parents.

Cathythoughts This sounds good! And you look nice & cosy 💕 2y

Love invites magical thinking. But how did we believe such a fairy tale? We had no alternative better than wild, empty hope 🖤

I wish I had bailed on this one because the fizzled ending just added another level of annoyance to a book I already did not like. I sort of feel like the author wanted to write a more literary take on the drama of mixed families but didn‘t so the pretentious writing style seemed out of place to me. The cover was pretty much the only thing I liked about this book.

Cinfhen Yikes 😱 6y
MeganAnn This makes me glad I bailed on this one last summer! It was due back at the library and I wasn't into it enough to to renew it for a second time. 😬 6y

This was quite the story! It's hard to explain without spoiling it, but a man with 2 teenagers meets a woman with 1 teenager and the man and woman fall in love and blend their families. Stuff happens. You read from various character perspectives in the here and now and get some back story along with what is currently going down. It is great and cringe worthy and funny and sad and would be an excellent book club pick

Made it to bed before 9 pm 🎉 new book and new duvet, I wish I could stay here until the weekend

moarbookspleaze I‘ve had this book in my stack for ages. Need to read! 6y
mcctrish I love the cover @moarbookspleaze and I'm really liking it so far ( page 75) characters are not perfect in a real human sense so can just imagine all the trouble that could ensue 6y

Time to curl up with a glass of wine, a cozy quilt and my current read. This one is full of wit, humor and keen observations on relationships of all ages so far.
