Nine Lives: Death and Life in New Orleans | Dan Baum
11 posts | 9 read | 16 to read
BONUS: This edition contains a Nine Lives discussion guide. Nine Lives is a multivoiced biography of a dazzling, surreal, and imperiled city, told through the lives of night unforgettable characters and bracketed by two epic storms: Hurricane Betsy, which transformed New Orleans in the 1960s, and Hurricane Katrina, which nearly destroyed it. Dan Baum brings the kaleidoscopic portrait to life, showing us what was lost in the storm and what remains to be saved.

I have been fighting a cold for a week now, so it's time for a nice, healing bath. Also a great time to get started on the next books in my #neworleans #tbr for my upcoming trip to #nola . I've already read books on Voodoo, Marie Laveau, and Madame Lalaurie. Next up are The Awakening, The Axeman, and Nine Lives. Any votes for which one I should start with??? #readinginthebath #bathtimereading

5feet.of.fury I haven‘t read The Awakening since college, but I loved it. You have such a great set up for your bath 🛁 14mo

Very powerful. The book follows nine Lower Ninth Ward residents and culminates shortly after Katrina.
The book is a sad reminder of how our government failed New Orleans

It was hard to keep track of the people with how the book was written so that took some away for me. I was just in NOLA so interesting to read about the areas devastated by Katrina.

Leftcoastzen Such a beautiful floof! 2y

As a nod to my upcoming first time trip to New Orleans November 19 to 22. Frightens I‘d read this and re-read Interview with a Vampire just because...

This nonfiction book was slow going at first. But after a while I was completely pulled in. It tells the story of 9 different people in New Orleans over the course of many decades & culminates w/Hurricane Katrina. Their stories are wildly different, a cop, young black girl, an Indian, a transgender person, a local politician, but all of them are part of the city in one way or another. It reminds me so much of Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil.

Even though I'm a West Coast native, I feel like a part of my heart is always in New Orleans. I love that city and I think Nine Lives captures its heart and soul beautifully. I definitely recommend spending some time with the book in just a couple of sittings--nine is a lot of characters to keep track of. It's worth it though. Be forewarned that you'll need a tissue for the Katrina and post-Katrina stories, which are so important to tell. ❤️

I'm still coming down from an amazing 5-day trip to New Orleans for my 30th birthday. This is such a lovely look at the wonderful diversity and fascinating history of #NOLA. Enjoying it so far.

Joyce Montana (Widow of Big Chief Tootie Montana) and son Darryl Montana. Photo by Roy Guste. After reading about them I had to google pics of the Mardi Gras Indians, very interesting history. #currentlyreading

TheBookStacker I live in New Orleans and got to see the Marci Gras Indians in person and I must say it is absolutely beautiful 7y

First trip to New Orleans coming up in a couple of weeks. Looking for books to read other than the usual travel guides. Fiction or non fiction...Recommendations?

Reviewsbylola I got married in NOLA. ❤❤❤ It is one of my favorite cities. The most well known book set there is 7y
britt_brooke Before we went there last May, I read A Streetcar Named Desire and Five Days at Memorial. The latter was excellent, but not a "fun" read at all. I HIGHLY recommend A Confederacy of Dunces, if you've never read it. ?? 7y
Reviewsbylola Most of the other books I've loved that are set there have to do either Katrina. 7y

Howseldomtheydo @Reviewsbylola @britt_brooke Thanks for the #recommendations I have read Dunces and I heard there is a statue of Ignatius J. Reilly in NOLA that I am going to seek out. 7y
britt_brooke The statue is on Canal Street in front of (I think) the Hyatt. It's easy to miss. We walked right past it when we were searching. 😁 7y
Joybishoptx Be sure and visit Faulkner House Books. Wonderful bookstore with some amazing 1st editions and signed copies of Faulkner books. They'll even let you touch them! I love New Orleans. The Anne Rice books are great to get a feel for the city too. 7y
kricheal So cool! Was literally just talking to my fiance before I opened up this app about how it's almost been 3 years since we were there 7y
jessdean New Orleans is such an awesome city. Enjoy!! 7y

Reviewsbylola Two of my sisters and my mom went to Tulane so it has always been a special city for my family but unfortunately I haven't been back since I got married in 2010. @britt_brooke 7y
Betty Dinner at Antione's-- an old OLD mystery with a twist. When we honeymooned in New Orleans, I insisted we have dinner at Antoine's. A sweet memory of our dessert of Babanas Foster. 7y
vivastory Make sure you have a beignet & chicory coffee! 7y
LeahBergen Beckham's Books on Decatur St is a fun used bookstore. 7y
LeahBergen And I'll stop now! Sorry! 😂 7y
Dragon For atmosphere and because I saw Anne Rice's mansion while visiting NOLA 7y
Howseldomtheydo @Betty @suvata @vivastory @LeahBergen @Dragon Thanks for all the great recommendations. 7y
Howseldomtheydo @LeahBergen We are staying at the French Market Inn, Beckham's is a 3 min. Walk from there! 7y
