Abdulrahman and Kathy Zeitoun run a house-painting business in New Orleans. In August of 2005, as Hurricane Katrina approaches, Kathy evacuates with their four young children, leaving Zeitoun to watch over the business. In the days following the storm he travels the city by canoe, feeding abandoned animals and helping elderly neighbors. Then, on September 6th, police officers armed with M-16s arrest Zeitoun in his home. Told with eloquence and compassion, Zeitoun is a riveting account of one familys unthinkable struggle with forces beyond wind and water. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Hurricane Katrina was a huge cluster fuck. You think you know the extent of the shit our government tries to pull, and then you find out more and it fucks with a brain spoon feed that “we‘re the best” since birth. It‘s hard to square that away with “we our not our government” but we kinda are...

I absolutely loved this book. The true story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun who stayed in his #NewOrleans home during and after Hurricane Katrina, helping neighbors until he was arrested without cause. Heartbreaking and important. #LetsTravelJuly

As expected, my reading has decreased significantly while I‘m excavating. Only 15 books this month—I suspect there will be even fewer next month. These were my three favorites, the tagged book beating out The Worst Hard Time by the slimmest of margins.

Remarkable & does not disappoint. The story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun & his family in the days leading up to Hurricane Katrina, the storm itself & then its aftermath is inspiring, deeply human, frustrating, horrifying &, ultimately, infuriating. As you read this book it‘s almost impossible to believe such things could happen in the US & yet they did. This book puts a very human face on what happens when disaster strikes. A definite recommend.

Picked this one to read next because it‘s been hanging out in my TBR pile for a while. Of course the first blurb I see is by Timothy Egan, the author of The Worst Hard Time. The only other Eggers book I‘ve read is The Circle—I didn‘t love it but there were parts of it—and certainly the IDEA behind it—I enjoyed. I have higher hopes for this one.

BarbaraBB I was blown away by this one. Eggers‘ best I think 6mo

I was too young during Katrina to know about what really went on but I remember it happening and everyone around me talking about it. This book was amazing to remind me of the tragedy and open my eyes now that I am old enough to really appreciate it. My love of Eggers just grows with every book of his I read

I was really into the book and had so much sympathy for the characters. Then I found out that Abdulrahman Zeitoun has since been arrested for trying to hire someone to murder his wife. So, that's kind of put a damper on my original opinion.

'It had been a dizzying series of events- arrested at gunpoint in a home he owned, brought to an impromptu military base built inside a bus station, accused of terrorism and locked in an outdoor cage.'

Zeitoun is a hero during Kathrina, but he ends up in inhuman circumstances based on prejudices. Such a good work of non-fiction by Dave Eggers.

"Think about it," Zeitoun laughed. "We're a Muslim couple running a painting company in Louisiana. Not such a good idea to turn away clients." Anyone who had a problem with rainbows, he said, would surely have trouble with Islam. So the rainbow remained.

This book is a must-read. Eggers has an amazing talent for portraying someone's else's story with empathy and insight. Zeitoun, a Syrian immigrant and small business owner, stays in New Orleans during and after Katrina when his family evacuated. Covers the devastation of Katrina, how easily the freedoms we believe are guaranteed can break down, and islamophobia. #nonfiction #litsatoz #letterE #readeverywhere #lrc4

Zeitoun is a book about the New Orleans hurricane, Katrina. Based on true experiences, A. Zeitoun, was introduced through his native, Syria. I learned a great deal about Syria and the Muslim religion. As Katrina approached, it was heartbreaking to learn the limited availability of assistance to the region. The narrator, Firdous Bamji, expertly portrayed the emotional ups and downs of the Zeitoun family.

#seasonsreadings2016 #titlesthatstartwithxyz I've yet to read my x & y selections...I'm saving them for my 2017 reading challenges but I did read Zeitoun & The Zookeepers Wife. If you need a "Z" title, I highly recommend Zeitoun?

AliBG I loved ZEITOUN when I read it, too...but the aftermath was so awful (divorce/stalking/soliciting murder charges and additional jail time) that eventually it left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't know a good way to navigate it when good nonfiction turns bad in real life--but I'm open to suggestions. I'd like to love this book again! 3y
Cinfhen @AliBG what????😱I didn't know any of the aftermath...in the book their marriage seemed so strong! That's so upsetting. I wonder if being falsely accused and imprisoned led to a disconnect!?! 3y
MicheleinPhilly @AliBG I was going to post this one too and decided against it for just those reasons. Such a heartbreaking turnaround. ☹️ 3y
LeahBergen I didn't know about that either! I loved Zeitoun. I'm not sure that I even want to read up on what happened 😬 3y
AliBG @Cinfhen I know. It is devastating. Yes, Probably the false imprisonment and also the shame and fame of the book--who knows. So sad, as tough situations like that always are. 🙁 3y
