Peer Review
Peer Review: A Critical Inquiry | David Shatz
3 posts | 1 read
While much literature has sprouted on peer review, this is the first book-length, wide-ranging study that utilizes methods and resources of contemporary philosophy. It covers the tension between peer review and the liberal notion that truth emerges when ideas proliferate in the marketplace of ideas; arguments for and against blind review of submissions; the alleged conservatism of peer review; the anomalous nature of book reviewing; the status of non-peer-reviewed publications; and the future of peer review.

I just recently signed up for #NetGalley and was wondering if anyone had advice on how to get chosen for books or how the whole process in general works? I don't have a lot of experience writing reviews but I'd like to start!

theresidentromantic It's the same as starting anything! I'm just starting too (and have fallen really behind this month!) I started out with the lesser known companies. They want readers and they're not picky. Look at the requirements before applying. For example St. Martin's Press wants a 2-3 year old blog min 6y
theresidentromantic And your not going to get those. But say a company you might not have heard of, they'll hand you the book. And the more you're approved, the more some of those bigger companies will take a chance on giving it to you. 6y
FantasyChick Start with some Read Now books and build your review ratio up. Also, keep your profile updated with links to anywhere you share reviews (GR, LT, Amazon, etc.) And check the publishers requirements before you request. Happy reading 😊 6y

Cinfhen I was going to say same as @FantasyChick start with ReadNow selections, they don‘t require approval and the more you review the more willing other publishers will be. I‘m doing this for over 5 years and I still get rejections dally...don‘t let those get to you!!! 6y
LibrarianJen If you are a librarian or a teacher use your work email address for verification. You will get more faster since you are in a position to influence people. I couldn‘t keep up with the arcs so I stopped using Net Galley plus I don‘t use Goodreads all that often or consistently blog so there is that too. 6y
rachelsbrittain Looks like several others have also said this, but I definitely recommend reviewing whichever of the read now books sound interesting (particularly shorter ones like comics or children's books that you can get through more of more quickly). After that, try to keep your review ratio up and request a lot of books so you're more likely to be accepted for some. Hope that helps 😊 6y
Shadowfat Thanks for the advice @theresidentromantic @FantasyChick @Cinfhen @LibrarianJen @rachelsbrittain that really helps! It's a good idea to check out the small publishers and read now. I'm not in the book industry so no pull there. Now I need to become a better writer 😀 6y
LibrarianJen Re becoming a better writer: haha! isn‘t that always the case. This is what I struggle with too. If you ever need someone to edit or give you tidbits on your writing I‘m more than willing to help. 😊 6y
Shadowfat Thanks @LibrarianJen I may take you up on that! I'm a scientist so I'm better at technical writing, but I'm hoping this will help me improve. 6y
Clwojick Update your profile with details about where you review. I mentioned that I have a large following on here, and that I am on Litsy and Goodreads daily. I also mentions my rather ambitious annual reading goal of 500 books and that I‘ll read basically anything so that the publishers know I‘m a fast reader and that I‘m likely to enjoy a wide variety of genres. 6y
Shadowfat @Clwojick that's a good idea to mention a reading goal and followers, I'll have to do that! I also need a better picture, it was hard finding one that met the size requirements 6y
Clwojick I just turned my pic sideways. 😬😂 6y

Hello, Littens! I've been working for a week on a presentation I'm giving tomorrow. The author lists I've been doing are part of it. I'm hoping to be done with my packet (minus attachments) in a bit. I'd like to get a few eyes on it before showing my supervisor & the Director tomorrow morning. I'm looking for 20 Littens to give me feedback tonight. First come, first serve. Hands please! I'll tag you when I'm done. Thank you!!! ☺️
