Requiem for a Dream
Requiem for a Dream | Hubert JR. Selby, Hubert Jr. Shelby
14 posts | 34 read | 45 to read
Over twenty years after its first publication in 1978, Requiem for a Dream makes it to the big screen in a major motion picture starring Ellen Burstyn, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans, Jared Leto, and Christopher McDonald. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the highly acclaimed director of Pi, the movie was released in November 2000. In this searing novel, two young hoods, Harry and Tyrone, and a girlfriend fantasize about scoring a pound of uncut heroin and getting rich. But their habit gets the better of them, consumes them and destroys their dreams. "Selby's place is in the front rank of American novelists. His work has the power, the intimacy with suffering and morality, the honesty and moral urgency of Dostoevsky's....To understand Selby's work is to understand the anguish of America." -- The New York Times Book Review

Mehso-so

#Reading1001
Low 3 ⭐️

The first half bored me I felt like the only sober one at a party where everyone else is finding 💩🤣🤣

Second half lived up to the title really depressing.

Selby captures the hopelessness and self deception of addiction and it is an interesting read from that point of view but it just didn‘t speak to me on an emotional level I was detached.

WhiskeyMistress Haven‘t read this book but omg the movie... talk about scenes that stick with you... 6y

I am on page 68 and the only thing I need to careful about so far is turning the gas on and then reading this, falling into a coma and blowing the house up 🤣🤣

Chili 🤣🤣🤣 6y

arubabookwoman Hated the book, but it was made into a very good movie (starring Shirley McLaine as the mother). 6y

Has anyone read this? The movie is one of my favorites, but curious as to how the book compares!

readordierachel Did not realize this was a book! 6y
amywithbooks @ReadOrDieRachel neither did I!! 6y
TheLibrarian The book is pretty good but I might like the movie better. I‘m not a big fan of super long paragraphs, which this had. 6y
amywithbooks @TheLibrarian good to know, thanks!! 6y
Jess7 I loved this movie! Never read the book. @TheLibrarian @ReadOrDieRachel @avgeyer 6y

I take responsibility for helping my parents when my dad was dying and moving home after he did. I do not take responsibility for the fact that I am paying the bills in an apartment I share with my mother, a dog, and three households worth of stuff. I‘m practically relegated to my bedroom and my coffee table has been under a blanket in the corner of the living room for almost 5 years. My brother has stuff here; he hasn‘t lived here in forever.👇🏻

dariazeoli I‘m just feeling weighed down by my familial duty right now and I know I‘m complaining from such a place of privilege. But I had 2 short years with no roommates and an apartment of my own, and nothing has been the same since I had to give it up to take care of things here. I miss my space. 6y
tjwill Sorry you are in a tough place right now. You are a wonderful person for taking care of your parents like that. 6y
sprainedbrain 😔 Family duty is rough, but how good of you to do what you‘re doing. 6y

Jas16 Sending love and support. Personal space is so important and I can only imagine how difficult it is to give it up even when you are doing it out of love for someone else 6y
DebinHawaii That must be very hard. Sending you hugs. 💜 6y
Kaye Would it be possible for you to move to your own place now ? I dont know your mom‘s age or health, but could you find her one of the senior apartment type places that check on them daily ? Some are very nice and have lots of activities and such to keep them entertained. They usually base the rent on their income. You could then have your own space close enough by to stop in and visit her. Just an idea. Not my business, trying to help. ♥️ 6y
jfalkens I couldn't imagine living with my parents or mother-in-law again. I've come to really appreciate being at home with just my husband and our cats and turtle. Hopefully your able to get some space in the apartment to yourself 🤞🤞 6y
dariazeoli Thank you @tjwill @sprainedbrain @Jas16 @DebinHawaii @Kaye - sometimes it‘s hard not to feel stuck and yesterday I was really feeling it. Unfortunately we‘re not in a situation where this is going to change anytime soon. Time to start playing the lottery more often 🤔 6y
Kaye I hope things can improve for you somehow . I guess at least you can tell yourself you tried your hardest to help your family when in need. Nothing wrong with feeling overwhelmed by it at times. I‘m sure it‘s a difficult weight to carry. 6y

Had a lecture on the opioid addiction epidemic this AM and had flashbacks to this book/movie. I was also grinning back to Evicted and reading about the tenant who struggled with heroin addiction... Does anyone know of any other books that discuss the difficulties of addiction, particularly opiates? I would love to gain some more insight into this particular patient population.

Brie I've heard is a good nonfiction book about this subject 7y
Brie Also for fiction there's 7y
ApoptyGina69 I have a non-fiction one from 1972. Takes place in France, where she's hospitalized, and Turkey (heroin addiction). I see it's available used on Amazon for under $12 7y

drokka Probably the entire Sherlock Holmes series for a broad overview. I don't know anything about this centre, but the list of books seems quite good. www.michaelshouse.com/blog/books-that-empower-opiate-addiction-recovery/ (edited) 7y
stargazerblue49 @Brie I have tried Trainspotting before (MCR phase and knowing they got their name from Irvine Welsh and all...), but my high school brain couldn't handle his judicious use of the C-word. Maybe I'll have to try it again! 7y
readinginthedark I've never read this before, but that movie was crazy. I used to cry every time I watched it, which was a lot when I was a teenager, for some reason. 7y

I got fired today and I don't even care. I've never felt more free in my life. Maybe tomorrow I will be a puddle on the floor. But right now I'm soaring💫 addiction is a terrible disease! You can try and try to help someone, but in the end, you have to protect yourself💗it's a sad way to end the last 11 yrs, but I'm looking forward to more! Ps. I plan on finishing my book tomorrow too ✌️theennnn I need a job😂😳

“He didnt know what was defeating him, but he sensed it was something he could not cope with, something that was far beyond his power to control or even at this point in time comprehend. ”

BilboBookends I absolutely love this movie...please tell me the book is a million times better 7y
LazyLibrary @BilboBookends I did enjoy the book! But it's not a typical read, in my opinion. It felt like a massive run on sentence. It def sets a tone and I felt like I was on drugs when I was reading it! But Jared Leto tho...😍 7y
Lupita.Reads Absolutely agree with you. ❤️📚 7y
kricheal This movie is one of my top two favorite movies of all time...purely for the acting and cinematography alone. I've had this on my tbr forever and I'm afraid it'll either not measure up or make me think less than the movie. 7y
LazyLibrary @kricheal I would definitely go ahead and read it. I personally liked the movie better, which is a rare thing to say. But the book was almost like a separate entity to me. They are different, and it's hard to compare. But both are worth it! 7y

... This novel will ruin my summer vacation... I know it.
I want the noose, I want the scorch burn!
I'm ready for the ride. Let's go! ☠☠

abhisynthe Interesting. Actually there are 3-gods: brahma for creation, shiva for destruction, Vishnu for order. Kali is the female embodiment of destruction - but more like someone who purges. Nonetheless - love aronofskys delivery of the surreal 8y

Truth. Always write what is truthful... Therein lies beauty and grace. Art always finds a way to validate our lives, no matter how fleeting, small or graceless it may seem to us. Art is a mother's bosom with room enough for all and eye enough to see and bring out those hidden angles of beauty.
