Death of a Dishonorable Gentleman
Death of a Dishonorable Gentleman: A Mystery | Tessa Arlen
11 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
Lady Montfort has been planning her annual summer costume ball for months, and with scrupulous care. Pulling together the food, flowers and a thousand other details for one of the most significant social occasions of the year is her happily accepted responsibility. But when her husband's degenerate nephew is found murdered, it's more than the ball that is ruined. In fact, Lady Montfort fears that the official police enquiry, driven by petty snobbery and class prejudice, is pointing towards her son as a potential suspect. Taking matters into her own hands, the rather over-imaginative countess enlists the help of her pragmatic housekeeper, Mrs. Jackson, to investigate the case, track down the women that vanished the night of the murder, and clear her son's name. As the two women search for a runaway housemaid and a headstrong young woman, they unearth the hidden lives of Lady Montfort's close friends, servants and family and discover the identity of a murderer hiding in plain sight. In this enchanting debut sure to appeal to fans of Downton Abbey, Tessa Arlen draws readers into a world exclusively enjoyed by the rich, privileged classes and suffered by the men and women who serve them. Death of a Dishonorable Gentleman is an elegant mystery filled with intriguing characters and fascinating descriptions of Edwardian lifea superb treat for those who love British novels.

I started reading Coffin Road by Peter May (on my original list)but bailed- too much of an eerie scary thriller for my night reading. Began the tagged library book instead last night. #20in4 #readathon

Probably 3⭐️. The last third of the book saved it. Early on, I had trouble sorting out characters, and subplots threatened to overwhelm the story line. But it finally became suspenseful. Since it takes place at an English country estate and gardens are part of the story, a picture from a garden we visited during last summer‘s trip to England.

KarenUK Where is this?... looks beautiful! 7y
Lynnsoprano @KarenUK I forget the name of the estate, but I‘ll go back and look it up. It‘s a National Trust property we visited while in Exmoor. 7y
Lynnsoprano @KarenUK This is Arlington Court 7y
KarenUK @Lynnsoprano Thanks for sharing Lynn... I‘ll add this to my list for my next trip home.... looks lovely, and I love that area 😘 7y

So we had a FaceTime call from @Ambrosnazzy while we were eating dinner. She is definitely feeling better after her procedure this morning, and happy to be able to host #litsypartyofone. During our call, I lost part of a tooth/filling, so it‘s not a great evening. But dinner-salmon with dill sauce and steamed squash-was wonderful b

My Kindle and I are in the waiting room while hubby has a physical therapy appointment. It‘s a relatively quiet office, so I‘ve got a solid hour of reading time, which has been at a premium recently. Bonus, we‘re going out for lunch when he finishes 😊

Next up for me is an historical mystery that works for my #MountTBRchallenge. I‘ve read another of the Lady Montfort mysteries and it was fun, so I‘m looking forward to this one.

A polite and proper take on cozies. Channeling Gosford Park and Downton Abbey this took me a while to get into because it is a very slow build which in a book, at least for me, can be difficult. The lady of the house and her steadfast housekeeper take to sleuthing when the dishonorable gentleman in question gets himself hanged during a country house party. Secrets come out, scandals are averted, and it's all resolved with the utmost of manners.
