Madeline Usher has been buried alive. The doomed heroine comes to the fore in this eerie reimagining of Edgar Allan Poe's classic short story "The Fall of the House of Usher." Gothic, moody, and suspenseful from beginning to end, The Fall is literary horror for fans of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Asylum. Madeline awakes in a coffin. And she was put there by her own twin brother. But how did it come to this? In short, non-chronological chapters, Bethany Griffin masterfully spins a haunting and powerful tale of this tragic heroine and the curse on the Usher family. The house itself is alive, and it will never let Madeline escape, driving her to madness just as it has all of her ancestors. But she won't let it have her brother, Roderick. She'll do everything in her power to save himand try to save herselfeven if it means bringing the house down around them. With a sinister, gothic atmosphere and relentless tension to rival Poe himself, Bethany Griffin creates a house of horrors and introduces a whole new point of view on a timeless classic. Kirkus Reviews praised it in a starred review as "A standout take on the classic haunted-house tale replete with surprises around every shadowy corner."

This was a pretty excellent, detailed retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher. I believe it‘s supposed to be YA but it seemed more like general fiction to me. A very atmospheric read.

I haven‘t ready any horror or anything too scary in years, but I found this #HauntedHouse book that is a retelling of Poe‘s Fall of the House of Usher. Seems interesting! #LitsySpringBreak

TheKidUpstairs I do love a good retelling! 3y
MallenNC @TheKidUpstairs I do too! I like seeing what a new author does with the original idea. 3y

I love Edgar Allan Poe, and since this book was inspired by some of his work, I had to read it. This did not let me down, it's so dark and eerie, with gothic themes and such a weird atmosphere through it all, it captured me.
The cover is beautiful, and even though you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, I feel that it counts.

I was feeling like a virtual bookshelf organization was overdue.
I also ended up making a fall swap wish list in case my #summerbookswap or #fallingforfallswap matches needed some stalking help. I'm Chelle (MaleficentBookDragon) on #Goodreads

Pandareads37 I enjoyed the Sofie Kelly book and the beast book is on my list (I'm such a huge Beauty and the Beast fan) 6y

Pumpkin! I ❤️ pumpkin spice.
Cozy (but I do like horror, too).
Hayride!
Hot cocoa, especially with marshmallow Fluff.
Corn maze - I love the ones that are a crazy shape from the sky.
Bonfires. I've never been tailgating but I hate sports.... which leads to
NO football. 😝

#Siblings A brilliant retelling of 'The Fall of the House of Usher'. Madeline and her twin brother, Roderick, both suffer from the family illness. But Madeline feels the house living and breathing around her. It talks to her, fills her dreams, controls her actions, ensuring she never leaves the property. #aprilbookshowers @RealLifeReading

#JudgedByItsCover These were all random book buys that I made because of their covers. A lot of times the cover is what draws my attention to a book to see if it has an interesting story. #marchintoreading @RealLifeReading

Nicohlay I would have grabbed all those too just on the covers alone lol they look really interesting! 7y
JessClark78 @Nicohlay I haven't read Caraval or Masque of the Red Death yet. I did read the other four and they were really good. 7y

Meh, it's weird. I don't like how it skips around by her age randomly. The concept is interesting.

Inspired by Poe's House of Usher. So it's gotta be good!

This was one of those 'Right book, right time' situations. I loved the creepy atmosphere and the fast pacing of the chapters. That ending may have broken a small piece of me.

callunakeep Oh hell yes!! This sounds right up my alley!! @DiruVamp You will probably want to read this too! 8y
DiruVamp @callunakeep LOVE the cover and the first line of the description had me! Added it to my TBR thanks!! 8y
callunakeep @DiruVamp I know! As soon as I read the name "Madeleine Usher" I was like "Poe's Usher?!?!" And it was on, I was excited! 8y
