Even I, who had resisted kicking and screaming, had to admit defeat. Why would love be impressed by the protests of a simple bookseller? Jakoba has had enough. It is 1999 and she looks back on her life that began at the start of the century. Her arrival was unexpected, but joyfully welcomed, by her middle-aged parents. In a time where a middle-class girl has one destiny, namely to become a wife and mother, Jakoba is allowed to start working at a bookshop. Books become one of the loves of her life. Later she will inherit the shop. She values friendship, but romance has no meaning for her. She values her independence too much and knows all too well what price women pay for being married. It is German army photographer Armin who will change the course of her life. Jakoba is forty when she meets him. Armin is almost thirty, and Germany has occupied Holland. It does not matter. For him, shes the one, and despite her hesitation both because of the war and because she cant understand what this handsome man sees in hera plain womanshe has to admit her feelings for him. Such love has consequences for both of them that will reach far beyond the war and in ways Jakoba could never have imagined.

When it‘s raining - head to the bookstore!

There‘s been some controversy about this bookshop - it‘s a Waterstones ( a U.K. chain) but posing as an Independent. It‘s in keeping with the town character and there is no other new bookshop in the town so I‘m glad they have a bookshop even if it feels a little sneaky!

Hooked_on_books It is a little sneaky, but books is definitely better than no books. 5y
Mitch @Hooked_on_books I think so. If it meant a real independent store closed down because of this one I‘d think differently, but its bringing books to a town that didn‘t have books 5y
TheEllieMo It seems to be a thing for Waterstones, I noticed a shop called The Blackheath Bookshop when I was recce-ing the start area of the London Marathon, popped in and realised it was a Waterstones 5y
Mitch @TheEllieMo I didn't know that one.. We were in Southwold a few weekends ago and it the same there too. 5y

Well, I may have lost some reading time to browsing a used and rare bookshop, chatting about climate change with some lovely patrons, and learning more about the sordid history of Wilmington, NC from one exceptionally gregarious bookstore owner. Worth it!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Totally worth it!! 6y
LeahBergen Oh, fun! Did you buy anything interesting? 6y
rmaclean4 What did you pick up? 6y

Kalalalatja Always worth it! 🙌 6y
tracey38 Nice! Is this store in Wilmington? If so I'll have to check it out next time I head to the beach. 6y
saresmoore @tracey38 It is! I like Old Books on Front St. better, but this one (McAllister & Solomon) is fun & quirky and very close to another friendly little bookshop, Pomegranate Books. 6y
tracey38 @saresmoore awesime, thanks! I'm only about 2 hours from Wilmington, so will definitely check them out! 6y
Suet624 It sounds as though you have so many bookstores around you. How lovely. 6y
saresmoore @Suet624 It is lovely, one of the reasons I‘m growing to really appreciate Wilmington. 6y

I went to a local bookshop today and look at these gorgeous editions, which all come up the Christmas. 😍

@ju.ca.no the next Coppenrath book is also published 💖😍😘

ju.ca.no Yes I know! I think I will wish for it for christmas😁 and I‘ve already seen the secret garden in english - so probably soon in german as well😊 6y
Sarah83 @ju.ca.no did I tell you, that I asked in a bookshop because of the secret garden? They told me, that the Coppenrath Verlag produces its own edition of the secret garden, so I will be the question if and not when they will come up with the fitting edition of the secret garden. 😭😭😭😭 6y
ju.ca.no @Sarah83 oh no... well in that case I might just buy the english one... how annoying! 6y

A favourite local bookshop has just re-opened after renovations. Before on the left, after on the right. I'm not sure that it's an improvement... But I'm drawn in like a moth to a #Flame #HeatOfJuly

Texreader Hmmm, it seems much darker. 6y
CarolynM @Texreader Yes, it is. That seems to be the current fashion. 6y
BarbaraBB And it looks more like all bookshop do these days. The books are still there though 😀 6y

Cinfhen Ha!! I thought it was just me who couldn‘t see the improvements @CarolynM @Texreader BUT you‘re right...who can resist a bookstore!?! 6y
Cathythoughts Like a moth to a flame ! “ I love it ! Both bookshops look nice to me 6y
LeeRHarry I was there last week and I thought it was much darker, bit sterile and boring - shame. 6y
CarolynM @LeeRHarry I preferred it when it was lighter. I didn't mind it being more open. What really disappointed me was that the new release bays have shrunk quite a bit. (edited) 6y
LeeRHarry @CarolynM they have indeed, and I agree I like that it‘s more open plan 😊 6y

Found a new local used book store today. This mural on the outside goes even further and wraps around the side and is amazing! There are rows and rows of books and at the end of each stack people can write messages! Oh....and there are kitties 😻 Two that live there and occasionally kitties that the owners foster that are up for adoption! I love this place!!! ❤️

TheLibrarian Books plus kitties. Sounds like heaven! 7y
GondorGirl Ooo! What's the name of the store (and what city is it in)? 7y
Kaye Isn‘t that a neat place ? Love seeing other people‘s bookstores. Did you find any good stuff ? 7y

CareBear This looks wonderful! I‘m with @GondorGirl where can I find this gem? 7y
Chasing_Pages @GondorGirl @CareBear It‘s called Cupboard Maker Books in Camp Hill PA It‘s so neat. They have so many books it‘s overwhelming! 7y
Chasing_Pages @Kaye There were so many, it‘s overwhelming! I got Bad Things Happen and The Last Dead Girl by Harry Dolan and Seeing Red by Sandra Brown all for $20. Not too bad. So many more I could get but I‘m trying to limit myself 😳 7y
Texreader Oh oh oh! My kind of bookstore! 7y
SALeahey I just happened upon this place in my Facebook feed this week! I live about 40 minutes away, but my best friend lives in Camp Hill and I may have to pay him a visit sometime very soon! 7y
inmegslibrary 😍😍😍 7y
Chasing_Pages @SALeahey You should definitely check it out. I live 15 mins away and had never been. I just wanted to find someplace new today and looked it up! 7y
MaleficentBookDragon I‘ve been there! There are so many books there it can get overwhelming. They also have some fun events. 7y
Chasing_Pages @MaleficentBookDragon Yes, they have book clubs too! I might be in too many already but I‘ll have to check the events. 7y

Here's my little #bookhaul that I got at another thrift store near me yesterday. They didn't really have a lot of books that I wanted. 😔 But, I'm glad I found these two! 😁
#thrift #deals

TricksyTails The thrift stores have been very sad for me lately. Not finding anything. At least you were able to find a couple good ones. Have you read The Passage? 7y
TheRiehlDeal @TricksyTails Not exactly, I read a preview of it, but I haven't read the entire book. 7y
TricksyTails It's good. Slow in parts but overall really enjoyable. 7y
