Drift
Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power | Rachel Maddow
26 posts | 21 read | 30 to read
Identifying what the author believes to be a battle between the priorities of civilian life and the war, the host of the critically acclaimed The Rachel Maddow Show explains that today's focus on national security is actually compromising national stability, tracing the historical events and contributing factors that have promoted a deeply militarized American culture.

Ha! "Chicken shittery" may be my new favorite term from a book. I'm so glad she's the narrator of her book.

#Audible

KathyWheeler I really liked this book. 4y

Maddow spoke here about the Reagan presidency, but also be said about many presidents since.

Listened to this audio book over several days of cleaning. Meticulously researched, thoroughly explained. Rachel traces the drift away from recognizing the costs of war on a human level as well as a monetary one. Also covered in this book are alarming facts about military privatization and the state of our nuclear weaponry and the handling of it. I learned a great deal and need Rachel to write more books!

Welp, Maddow just spit out a racial slur ("j*ps"). How hard would it have been to just say "the Japanese army?" We're fucking done here. I'm never watching her fuckass show again either.

I'm not sure if I'm going to finish this audiobook. I love the sound of Rachel Maddow's voice and always have, and it has a lot of concrete, helpful facts I need in order to understand the Bush era, but her analysis, history, and vision of the US steadfastly ignore or justify its many crimes against nonwhite people, especially through her veneration of the founders. Maybe the facts will be helpful enough to make it worth my time, but I don't know.

Doing some #audiocooking while I prep this week‘s CSA haul. Loving these watermelon radishes!!!

Tamra Gorgeous! I miss CSA - quit bc we‘re gone so much in the summer. 6y
daniwithtea @Tamra I love ours so much - it‘s an urban farm, on what used to be an empty lot in the middle of the city. We tend to vacation in summer/fall so it works for us - I would miss it terribly if it didn‘t! 6y
Tamra @daniwithtea you inspire me to check to see if I can get late summer/fall boxes. 🌽🥦🥒🥕🌶🥔 6y

Long day at work for me today, but at least I have Rachel Maddow to keep me company...

AmyG She is one of my most favorite people. I watch her every night of the week. And NO talking during her show. 6y
daniwithtea @AmyG I am on a “media diet”, but I used to watch her all the time :) 6y
AmyG Ha! She is the only political show I watch. I went on a diet, too. ;) 6y

.Maddow takes us on a journey from the war in Vietnam to Afghanistan, explaining how the rise of executive presidential power and our out - sourcing of weapons to private corporations may not be a wise thing...
Rachel Maddow is courageous, witty, provocative, intelligent and hard to ignore. You love her or you hate her....her common sense attitude makes sense to me...
Highly recommended

A strong, comprehensive, and surprisingly entertaining argument from Maddow about the slide of the American military from an essential part of civilian life to a secretive organization in a neverending war without oversight. Her history, which goes from LBJ to Obama, points out where both parties and all branches of government ceded essential responsibility, and in doing so did severe damage to our military men and women.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa This one has been on my list to read for awhile now, I need to move it up a bit more. 7y

Changing it up and showing my husband's bookshelf since I always show mine. He was tired of always getting pushed off of my shelves (the #spacejam was real in our last apartment), so when we moved I told him I wouldn't add a single thing to this shelf. It's full of about 90% nonfiction, 5% John Updike, and 5% random miscellaneous stuff (records, a wild thing, presidential M&M's, a Star Trek phaser). This is why I love him. 💕

goodbyefrancie As a history nerd, and a lover of non-fiction in general, this looks amazing to me. I have a signed copy of Drift, found at a used book store. The wild thing is a definitely plus! 7y

This books had just about everything I love. Maddow's insight and wit (swoon), new (to me) historical facts (YASS), and modern American war analysis (*faints*). If you're familiar with Maddow's style of getting to a point through pointing out its historical significance or modern parallel, you'll find this book easy&entertaining to read. It shows how we got from the Framers' intent that only Congress could declare war to our constant "conflicts."

Unfiltered Maddow is even better than adorable TV Maddow. Like my massive, long-standing, verging-on-obsessively-weird girl crush needed more fuel. 😍

This book is making my head want to explode! "Saint" Reagan seems to be the biggest chicken hawk (emphasis on the chicken) I've ever heard of. I can't believe the GOP has practically canonized this schmuck. ?
