Fever | Deon Meyer

'UK readers, you have a nice surprise coming. No, not Brexit, FEVER, by Deon Meyer. Reminiscent of THE STAND and THE PASSAGE. Great stuff' STEPHEN KING A stunning standalone from a master of suspense, a compelling story of survival and betrayal set in a world after 'The Fever'. Nico Storm and his father Willem drive a truck filled with essential supplies through a desolate land. They are among the few in South Africa - and the world, as far as they know - to have survived a devastating virus which has swept through the country. Their world turned upside down, Nico realises that his superb marksmanship and cool head mean he is destined to be his father's protector, even though he is still only a boy. But Willem Storm, though not a fighter, is both a thinker and a leader, a wise and compassionate man with a vision for a new community that survivors will rebuild from the ruins. And so Amanzi is founded, drawing Storm's 'homeless and tempest-tost' - starting with Melinda Swanevelder, who they rescued from brutal thugs, Hennie Flaai, with his vital Cessna plane, Beryl Fortuin with her ragtag group of orphans and Domingo, the man with the tattooed hand. And then there is Sofia Bergman, the most beautiful girl that Nico has ever seen, who changes everything. So the community grows - and with each step forward, as resources increase, so do the challenges they must face - not just from the attacks of biker brigands, but also from within... Nico will find experience hardship and heartbreak and have his loyalty tested to its limits as he undergoes an extraordinary rite of passage in this new world. Looking back as he writes in memoirs later in life, he recounts the events that led to the greatest rupture of all - the murder of his father. Internationally bestselling crime writer Deon Meyer has delivered a gripping epic like nothing else he has written before, yet still with that consummate skill to make you care about his characters, and to keep the pages turning, breathless with anticipation - and surprise at its twists.

Having now read this book in both English and the originally written language Afrikaans, I even more maintain that this is my top favourites read of 2021!

Although I originally read this book in English, Fever, and absolutely loved it, I have to read it in the language it was first written in, Afrikaans, which is also my mother tongue.
It is such a phenomenal story, I will probably read it a few more times in my lifetime. Absolutely 5 star book!

One of the best books I've read in a long time. Absolutely gripping and a true page turner.
Written in 2016, it's a dystopian novel of the world being attacked by a virus that wipes out 95% of the world's population. The book, based in South Africa, focuses on the 5% of the population that is left and how they rebuild society.

This was eerie... fever from a (no joke here) coronavirus wipes out 95% or so of the world population. The survivors have to rebuild from the ground up. It is Walking Dead without the zombies essentially. Although I found this too verbose in spots, it is an interesting take on the post apocalyptic genre. The ending was satisfying but somewhat abrupt considering the majority of the book is a long, slow burn. Overall I enjoyed it.

TerriGreen Sounds like this sci fi may hit a little too close to home! 🦠 4y

And the second author I saw at the lit.Ruhr today. Deon Meyer. Talked about his new book, not a crime at all and about life in South Africa. 🤗

Deon Meyer's post-apocalyptic novel (translated from Afrikaans by K. L. Seegers) is an epic coming-of-age tale set in South Africa about Nico who's torn between two fathers (Willem and Domingo) and although the murder device doesn't really come off due to an anti-climatic pay-off and the framing device means that Nico is never in jeopardy, the story is well-researched, believable and had me completely engrossed from start to finish.

Trying to decide if I should keep at Fever (it's good, but depressingly post-apocalyptic and I don't know if I care), or abandon to review something else. What would you pick?? (Tagged options in comments.)

Surprise #bookmail! I was absolutely sure I hadn't ordered anything, and a box from Goldsboro Books was an exciting mystery! Did I win something? Turned out to be an unexpected gift from @Simona Thank you! I'm not sure I have read any South African literature before, so now you are expanding my reading horizon. 😊

Simona This is my 'thank you note' and surprise book-mail is always a good mail and nice to received. Enjoy in the book and summers days 😘 7y

I requested this one bc I'm a big fan of Meyer's Benny Griessel series - love the way he evokes contemporary South Africa. But I didn't realize this is a standalone! Set in a post-plague future South Africa, where survivors work together to create a utopian settlement. Super intrigued! Pubs 9/5. #julybookmailforme

Marchpane @silentrequiem the author is quoting ideas from this other excellent book: 7y
Ericmanciniwriter Woahhhh - brain 💥. You think they got the idea from Sapiens? Sounds spot on 7y
Marchpane @Eamann most definitely! It's listed in the bibliography (kind of unusual for a novel to have a bibliography, huh?) 7y

#TBRtemptation post 4! #BEA17 edition! Young Nico and his father, Willem, are one of the few left in South Africa after a virus wipes out the country. Willem founds Amanzi, a community to build from the ruins, and a diverse group of survivors. Challenges both inside and outside increase. This is Nico's recounting, and his hunt for the murderer of the person he loved most. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
