Another classic piece of Children's fiction, written in 1904! Well worth considering if you are doing the A to Z Classics challenge in 2018. #noteworthynovember

Well, I couldn't pass these up when @aeeklund posted them appearing at her bookstore! SO glad I did - they are pristine! I also appreciate the note on the receipt to 'wrap well' - they were packed like the treasures they are! 💕💕
It seems like they were never read 🙀
And are well worth ruining my book buying ban 😁

Just had to be the classic The Phoenix and the Carpet by Edith Nesbit. This was written in 1904 but still a great story. I still remember the series on children's tv based on this book when I was child - I remember asking what a Phoenix was! #magiccarpetride

This was also the first time I had ever heard about a magic carpet.

Cinfhen Wow! 1904!!! 🙌🏻 8y
Andrew65 @Cinfhen Such an achievement to even be published as a woman in 1904, but to have stood the test of time! 8y
Cinfhen So true💞 8y

rockpools I do have a very vague memory of a phoenix on kids tv - I wonder if this is what it was from. Think it's time for an E Nesbit revival! 8y
Andrew65 @RachelO I have vague recollections of a Phoenix rising from the fire, a Phoenix rising from the ashes? 8y
rockpools @Andrew65 It sounds like it - whatever it was the image has stuck - very 1970s? I looked it up on imdb but no pics, but the date would make sense... 8y
Andrew65 @RachelO looked up on YouTube and it says 1976-77 which might fit, the pictures bring back memories. The video is not working but may be our internet connection. Also looks like there was a remake in the 1990s. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=The+Phoenix+and+the+carpet 8y
rockpools @Andrew65 Pretty sure that's the one! The video worked here. And that link led to all sorts of childhood classics - Chorlton!! 8y

I remember loving The Phoenix and the Carpet as a kid. This was the version I had - look at it - is there anything these books don't have? And I could never get my head round the fact she wrote the Railway Children as well. Litsy's turning me into an aspiring re-reader!

EloisaJames I adore these books!! I still remember my mother reading them aloud (in a farm in Minnesota) and explaining what treacle was. It sounded so exotic! 8y
LeahBergen I have this very edition! 💗💗 8y
Andrew65 This is the book I chose too. 8y
rockpools @Abailliekaras @batsy I can't believe how many books she actually wrote. I've only heard of about 5 of them! Definitely need a reread sometime soon. 8y
rockpools @EloisaJames That is such a lovely memory! And I love the thought of exotic treacle 😋. 8y
rockpools @LeahBergen Mine disappeared during one of those spring cleans/house moves/water damage/visits from people with little readers/million ways books leave you . Love that you still have yours - I think phoenix was my favourite of the 3. 8y

Man, it's a great feeling when a childhood favorite stands up to re-reading. This time, the poetical, self-cherishing Phoenix stole the show for me -- but the children's good hearts, their unsupervised adventures, and their access to magic are still as delightful as ever. (TW: 1909 cultural norms.)

And the Nesbit feasting continues. She's earned the "Re-read" badge on Audible. ?
