I loved the sympathetic treatment, and the surprise at the end. There are laugh out loud moments, pathos aplenty, and social commentary that doesn‘t get preachy. I don‘t have any basis for judging hoe historically/biographically accurate it is. But I hope it is. Oh how I hope it is.

My grandfather used to be annoyed by people asking if we were related to Willie Sutton. (Spoiler alert - we‘re not.) So I thought it would be interesting to learn something about him.

Bailedbailed

I picked this one up bc it sounded exciting- America's most successful bank robber! I bailed bc I was dragging myself thru it. His recollections interspersed with what was 'then present day'. Don't bother.

The atmosphere in this book is incredible. I‘m currently reading the portion where Willie Sutton describes Times Square in the 1940s, with the names statues and waterfall on Bond‘s and the Camel sign that actually blew smoke rings.

I‘ve spent the latter part of the month reading only the longest standing books on my to-read lists on here and GR, reading only those I actually own. Out of the three I‘ve completed so far, two were 4 ⭐️ and one (His Bloody Project) was a 5 ⭐️ star. I‘ve been pleasantly surprised.

Book 4 has been stacked on Litsy for years. I don‘t know why I never reached for this one before but it is the epitome of well written historical fiction.

MicheleinPhilly I really enjoyed this one. 4y

In this #shelfie you can see a Mike Moustakas bobble head and Woody A. Logg. My dad once randomly handed me a log for the wood burning stove and told me it was for good luck and its name was Woody. Sure enough, he had written Woody A. Logg on it. It resided in my car for awhile and has been on my bookshelf for the last decade, roughly. #aprilbookshowers

#thisshouldbeamovie

Willie Sutton's life hasn't gotten the big Hollywood treatment? What is up with that? Seriously filmmakers, get on this asap.

#seasonsreadings2016

Peterdamien I'd never even heard of him til you posted this, but thanks to a Google, I agree. I want a movie. 8y
Reviewsbylola Sutton sounds great! I swear my TBR has just exploded over the last few days. 8y
Marchpane @Reviewsbylola It's a great book, incredibly well written as well as a top story @Peterdamien little details of his prison breaks made their way into movies like The Great Escape and Shawshank Redemption but Willie's own story is more than worthy. 8y

I have more #onewordtitles than I thought, but this is probably my favorite. Anthony Doerr called it an "utter joy to read" and I concur. It's about a NYC bank-robber's life. Narration shifts from 1969 back to the 1920s bank robbing days. Superbly done. It's resting on my candy cane jammies because that is what Saturday mornings are for. #photoadaynov16

Marchpane Agree, this book is fantastic 👍 8y
Hollie @Marchpane have you read his The Tender Bar? It's probably my 2nd fav book of all time 8y

Fictionalization of the legendary bank robber, Willie "The Actor" Sutton, based off the 1st real-life interview he gave after being released from prison the 5th and last time. Takes place in 1900s-1960s NYC. The prose and dialogue are amazing--many great one-liners! The story of unrequited love is heart-wrenching & nearly brought me to tears. I pictured James Caan playing Willie. Captivating history! Pair with: Speakeasy Prohibition Ale, chilled.

Wow--I liked this book much more than I thought I would. It's historical fiction based on the life of infamous bank robber (and prison escape artist) Willie Sutton. Interesting questions brought up--like why are banks allowed to rob people (Great Depression)? Also, it has a cool twist near the end

ShelfSpaceLimited I don't know if I should be ecstatic I own so many books on my TBR pile that get great reviews, or if I should be disheartened that I still continue to get new books from the library. Of course I feel like library books need to be read first. So many books so little time ! 8y

Time is a thief, but he's not subtle. He's a thug. And youth is a little old lady walking through the park with a pocketbook full of cash...You want to keep time from robbing you? Hold on for dear life, boys. When time tries to snatch something from you, just grab tighter...That's what memory is.

Based on the true story of Willie "the actor" Sutton, NYC bank robber, Moehringer will steal your heart with this one. I loved the NYC setting spanning from 1901 Brooklyn slums to 1969. You'll be rooting for a bank robber, so there's that. A+!
