The Tender Bar
The Tender Bar: A Memoir | J. R. Moehringer
The New York Times bestseller and one of the 100 Most Notable Books of 2005. In the tradition of This Boy's Life and The Liar's Club, a raucous, poignant, luminously written memoir about a boy striving to become a man, and his romance with a bar. J.R. Moehringer grew up captivated by a voice. It was the voice of his father, a New York City disc jockey who vanished before J.R. spoke his first word. Sitting on the stoop, pressing an ear to the radio, J.R. would strain to hear in that plummy baritone the secrets of masculinity and identity. Though J.R.'s mother was his world, his rock, he craved something more, something faintly and hauntingly audible only in The Voice. At eight years old, suddenly unable to find The Voice on the radio, J.R. turned in desperation to the bar on the corner, where he found a rousing chorus of new voices. The alphas along the bar--including J.R.'s Uncle Charlie, a Humphrey Bogart look-alike; Colt, a Yogi Bear sound-alike; and Joey D, a softhearted brawler--took J.R. to the beach, to ballgames, and ultimately into their circle. They taught J.R., tended him, and provided a kind of fathering-by-committee. Torn between the stirring example of his mother and the lurid romance of the bar, J.R. tried to forge a self somewhere in the center. But when it was time for J.R. to leave home, the bar became an increasingly seductive sanctuary, a place to return and regroup during his picaresque journeys. Time and again the bar offered shelter from failure, rejection, heartbreak--and eventually from reality. In the grand tradition of landmark memoirs, The Tender Bar is suspenseful, wrenching, and achingly funny. A classic American story of self-invention and escape, of the fierce love between a single mother and an only son, it's also a moving portrait of one boy's struggle to become a man, and an unforgettable depiction of how men remain, at heart, lost boys.

This book sat on my shelf for ages. I had the mistaken impression it was a man's grim journey of alcoholism. I could not have been more wrong. This memoir cover his father's abandonment, his mother's courage, his family - a cast of odd and scary characters - and Uncle Charley, a bartender at a very special bar, who takes him under his wing at a very young age and introduces him to men who care for him over the years. (continued...)

Suet624 Throughout his journey at Yale, the NY Times, a woman he can't get out of his system, we learn so much about the people who populate the bar as he continues to return as a touchstone. These folks are written about with great love. I've read the book he ghostwrote for Andre Agassi and I have thought about that one for ages. He also ghostwrote several others, including Harry's memoir, Spare. The Tender Bar will stay with me. 8mo
keithmalek I LOVE this book and have read it a couple times throughout the years. I also loved Agassi's book, and didn't know until now that it was ghost-written by Moehringer. Also, when I heard that they adapted it into a film, I was quite skeptical that it would be any good. I was wrong. You should watch it. 8mo
shortsarahrose I didn‘t know this was a book! I watched the film when it came out and thought it was quite good. 8mo

Suet624 @keithmalek He also ghostwrote Shoe Dog for the Nike founder. It's funny when I watch the U.S. Open I always think of Agassi's book. Moehringer does such a great job of describing what a body feels like after a match. I want to see the movie but I'm trying to do so without dealing with Amazon. I don't give them any money. I'm glad you liked Tender Bar as much as I did. 8mo
Suet624 @shortsarahrose Honestly, from what I read of the comparison of the two - movie vs. book - it seems like they leave out some of the more interesting characters from the bar. If you ever have time, you might want to try the book. I'm trying to figure out how to get access to the film. :) 8mo
keithmalek @Suet624 It makes sense that he wrote Shoe Dog. Ben Affleck directed the film adaptation (which is called Air), and also played the uncle in The Tender Bar. 8mo
Leftcoastzen One of my all time favorites! Love this book! 8mo
Suet624 @keithmalek Oh, I didn't realize there was a movie from that book too.
8mo
Suet624 @Leftcoastzen I think you commented on this book which made me grab it at a book sale. Thanks for that! 8mo
Leftcoastzen The movie is very good too, but can‘t be as deep as the book of course . 8mo
keithmalek @Suet624 I admire your adamantine position on Amazon. Do you mind if I use the word "adamantine?" 8mo
Suet624 @keithmalek I certainly don‘t mind you using that word but I had to look up the definition. 🤦🏻‍♀️🥴. And yes, it fits. I will never give them a penny. 8mo
keithmalek @Suet624 I had to look it up, too. I was trying to sound like the uncle from The Tender Bar.😅 8mo
Suet624 @keithmalek haha, that‘s hysterical. I had totally missed that. Thanks for filling me in. 8mo

I have not seen the movie of this book, but the critics say it is actually tender, unlike the book. A memoir of a boy living in Manhasset,NY with a single mother who believes her son‘s success depends on going to Yale. J.R.‘s life revolves around the Dickens Bar and its cast of characters, where everyone drinks and then drink some more. While the mother/son relationship is filled with love, the glorification of alcohol was disturbing. Good writing.

“Every book is a miracle,” Bill said. “Every book represents a moment when someone sat quietly- and that quiet is part of the miracle, make no mistake-and tried to tell the rest of us a story. … He said it was no accident that a book opened just like a door. Also he said, intuiting one of my neuroses, I could use books to put order to chaos.”

3-26-22: My 28th finished book of 2022! What a fantastic memoir. JR moved to Manhasset with his mom when he was 7, into the “shit house” filled with an eclectic cast of characters. The biggest character, though, was the bar down the road, Publicans, where his uncle Charlie bartended. We go through JR‘s life from 7 through to adulthood and all his trials and tribulations and Publicans is usually at the center of things. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣2️⃣8️⃣

GidgetsTreasures75 The movie based on this book, by the same name stars Ben Affleck as Uncle Charlie and is fantastic. You can find it on Amazon Prime. 🎥 2y

Of course, the book was better than the movie, but the memoir is a kind look back at relationships J.R. formed with the men at the #pub as he grew up with a mostly absent and always unreliable father. I must have been about 5 or 6 when my dad's buddies would set me up on the bar and bring me treats while my dad took his turn bowling. Pic of our nearby hole-in'the-wall dive with great food!.

I loved this coming-of-age memoir and regret that I gave away my hardcover copy a while back in lieu of obtaining an audio version. (Also regret that it‘s abridged, since it came to an end too quickly.). There‘s just something about Moehringer‘s writing style that appealed to me.
Just recently read that Prince Harry has chosen him to co-write his autobiography, supposedly being published later this year. I will be all over that!

This is the only book I could think of for today‘s prompt. It was mildly interesting, about growing up in a dysfunctional family who operated a local bar. I kept waiting for the author to own up to his own alcoholism.

Hey @Julie548- I got your book the other week and I will be sending it back your way tomorrow.

I find The Tender Bar a nice tribute to his mother as J.R. tries to figure himself out his manhood and the lessons he has gained over this life. I did find the book a bit slow at times though.

Quote 2 of two “quotes“ I promised in my review:

Already in young years JR adopts a useful and witty mantra (I think from his mother) which I would like to keep in mind for further smaller and bigger times of trouble in my own life:

“I will not worry about something that won‘t happen.”

blurb

Quote 1 of two “quotes“ I promised in my review:

JR‘s mother once tells him she has an “affair” with the truth and that sometimes that “affair” requires, like in all relationships do, the will to compromise. Lies, so is her attitude, are no bigger sin than to turn the volume of the radio down to protect him, JR, from the voice of his father that comes out of the loudspeaker.

By doing this his mother only turns the truth a little bit lower.

The blurb: A lie. It‘s no book about a boy growing up in a bar. I feel betrayed. As well because what forms the protagonist never ever is his time at the bar – even if he makes his audience believe so.

Apart from two „quotes“ I will post hereafter I won‘t keep much of the book in mind. Technically it‘s well done and that species of „barstoolers“ seems well portrayed, too.

But I resent the wrong expectations created by the marketing department.

blurb
Buechersuechtling
The Tender Bar: A Memoir | J. R. Moehringer

The story reminds me of Elizabeth Strout‘s „Das Leben, natürlich“ which is also told slowly and has no real suspense curve. That alone doesn‘t matter to me but I can‘t get rid of the impression that the real important things that happened to JR in his own retrospective – which this book is although it took me long to notice this – are not given the significance they actually have had for him and his life. This he hides between the lines. ?

How to have a sleepless night professionally:

1) Turn on your audiobook
2) Set a sleep timer
3) Listen
4) Fall asleep while listening, as intended
5) Wake up when the sleep timer has counted down and the “noise” stops
6) Start again with 1).

Buuuut – by using this method I got ahead with the story quite well.

Meanwhile it has lost some intensity. It does not really drag but it also has no suspense curve.

Apart from that unlikely richness of details I really like it. It‘s, intendedly, I suppose, a kind of “boy‘s-book”. To me as a woman those wannabes whose only purpose in life seems to be hanging on barstools are not very attractive …

But I can understand why the lack of male idols pulls the boy almost magnetically towards them. In this aspect the book is well written although I cannot quite follow his prompt fascination for the “Dicken‘s”.

I am not informed well enough to judge if this is supposed to be one of those “great big US-American social novels”. Anyway, it‘s the first time I really realise how unrealistic such (coming of age) stories sometimes are. I mean, I can‘t remember so many detailed passages of my life between the age of seven and nine years. Can you❓

Goal for today: Call it a night early and finally notably proceed with this one.

I am still convinced it will do great as an audiobook because I like the plot setting. But to really find a “valid” opinion it would be great to make more progress than 10 minutes here and there. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I've had TWO exes in two days text me out of the clear blue, both asking for book recs. I blame the full moon/icepocolypse. I recommended this for both men, for different reasons. It's compelling and amazing, but one of these men grew up w/o a bio dad and has a drinking problem, so it has messages he can relate to. The writing is very masculine, but also beautiful. I may need to re-read again!

Suzze I remember how popular this was when it came out, so a few years ago I bought the Ebook when it was cheap. Still haven't read it. But it sounds good! 😜 7y

"People just don't understand how many men it takes to build one good man. Next time you're in Manhattan and you see one of those mighty skyscrapers going up, pay attention to how many men are engaged in the enterprise. It takes just as many men to build a sturdy man, son, as it does to build a tower."
