Murder in the City
Murder in the City: New York, 1910-1920 | Wilfried Kaute
4 posts | 1 read | 22 to read
When night falls on New York, the shadows are everywhere and death wears many faces. How the victims leave their bodies is deeply personal, but the witnesses to their death and the factors that brought it about belong to the public worlda somber world which is encapsulated in this gruesome survey of crime and violence in the 1910s. Parts of the city that are today among its trendiest neighborhoods were once the battlegrounds of evil forces, which left their mark in unforgettable ways. Here, newspaper clippings, police reports and testimonies are placed alongside the scenes that they describe, fleshing them out and giving life to the departed. Complete with an introduction from German actor and writer Joe Bausch, this book is a must for anyone who has ever anxiously imagined how dark an activity like dying can beand isnt that everyone?

#copsong has me thinking about this amazingly morbid book I found on #bookoutlet!! Back in the nineteenth and early twentieth century NYC cops used to dispose of crime scene photos in the Hudson River when they were no longer needed. These photos were forgotten in an old building, lucky for us!, and therefore survived to be published in this book 🔪
#musicalnewyear

Mitch I‘ve been following the blog of these photos online. Morbidly fascinating! 5y
emilyhaldi @Mitch oohhhh I need to look into that!! 5y

Pickpick

Thank you to @emilyhaldi for bringing this one to my attention. It is a morbid and fascinating collection of crime scene and other related photographs that were discovered recently in NYC. Typical protocol was to dump all the photographs in the Hudson River after a certain amount of time, so the existence of these is fortunate. The text of various newspaper articles was also included, but the book is almost all photos.

robinb Wow...dumping in the river??! 😳 Sounds more like what you‘d do with the body, not the photographs. (edited) 6y
Soubhiville Yeah @robinb weird, huh? 6y
Reviewsbylola They also dumped old murder weapons in there too. Like thousands!! @robinb @Soubhiville 6y

emilyhaldi Wow I didn't know that about the dumping part, just that they found these photos recently. How bizarre?!? And weapons too?? No wonder you're not supposed to swim in there 🤣 glad you liked this! 6y
robinb @Reviewsbylola , @soubhiville Good grief! This is literally one of those “everything-but-the-kitchen-sink” cases. 🙄😫😂😂 Now I‘m imagining everything that could be under all that water...😱😱😱 6y
LeahBergen So, like... if you had to dispose of the weapon after you murdered someone back in the day, the Hudson would be the perfect place? Wtf? 😂 6y
LauraBeth I dated someone for a minute who was a cop with the NYPD and he took me on a boat ride around Manhattan at night and I remember thinking it was romantic with the NYC skyline all lit up as a backdrop and he leaned in and said, “You‘d have NO idea how many dead bodies are in the Hudson this very minute.” I never went out with him again but it did give me pause every time I looked at the Hudson. So no @emilyhaldi - NO swimming!! 😂 6y
Reviewsbylola Oh my good lord @LauraBeth I would have been like PLEASE tell me more!!!! 👂 👂 👂 6y
emilyhaldi Wow 😱 @LauraBeth I need to get down there with some scuba gear!!!!! 6y

At the risk of making you guys think I'm a total sicko, I have to share this recent #bookoutlet purchase! It contains crime scene photos taken in #NewYork City between 1910-1920 & it's not for the faint of heart. Some photos have corresponding newspaper articles, like this one, explaining how 2 burglars ended up dead at the bottom of an elevator shaft in the middle of a robbery after the car went up a few floors on its own accord...😳

elkeOriginal This looks awesome. #sicko (edited) 6y
LauraBeth Do you ever listen to the podcast The Popcast? One of their hosts, Jamie Golden, is OBSESSED with crime scene photos and talks about them (and her obsession) a lot. 6y
GripLitGrl This looks very interesting I'd give it a read 6y
