Body on Baker Street: A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery
Body on Baker Street: A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery | Vicki Delany
12 posts | 14 read | 8 to read
Gemma Doyle and Jayne Wilson are busy managing the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium on Baker Street and adjoining Mrs. Hudson's Tea Room in anticipation of the store's upcoming book signing with the illustrious Renalta Van Markoff, author of the controversial Hudson and Holmes mystery series. But during the author Q&A session, dedicated Sherlockian Donald Morris verbally attacks Renalta and her series for disgracing Sherlock's legacy, only to be publicly humiliated when the author triumphantly lashes back and gains the upper hand. That is until Renalta collapses on the table--dead. Donald insists he didn't do it and pleads to his friends to clear his name. Fortunately, Gemma and Jayne have no shortage of suspects between author's bullied personal assistant, her frustrated publicist, the hapless publisher, a handsome rare book dealer, an obsessively rabid fan, and a world of other Sherlock enthusiasts with strong objections to Renalta's depiction of the Great Detective. It's up to the shrewd sleuthing duo to eliminate the impossible and deduce the truth before the West London police arrest an innocent man in Body on Baker Street, the second Sherlock Homes Bookshop mystery perfect for fans of Miranda James and Kate Carlisle.

Finished books 1 & 2 in this series. Both are #Roll100 & #readyourebooks books with the second being a spun book for November.
The FMC can be a bit grating at times but overall I enjoyed these cozies with a Sherlock based bookshop and tea shop setting.

I had to get a little vague on this one. Iron Widow was one of the first book from my TBR this month so I‘m excited to finally be able to get to it 😍 #thingsincommon

Clwojick Vague is totally okay! Some of mine are too. That‘s the only way to get through a whole month of planned TBR picks. 2y

This cozy was fantastic! The second in the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop series, it was just as good as the first. Fun to read and I love Gemma and Jayne even more now! Though I really want to know why Estrada hates Gemma so much and if she ever gets over it. Guess I‘ll have to continue the series to find out!

Stopped at Bath & Body Works after work today. Decided to treat myself after a busy day of making 27 1/2 lbs of fudge.

I‘m really enjoying this series on audio. I almost just want to sit in my car to finish it!

Christine That‘s a lot of fudge!! 🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫 6y
Daisey This is one of my favorite Bath & Body scents. A few years ago a 6th grader gave me a bottle of this lotion and it became a bit of a running joke that I would purposefully get out the lotion if something/someone is being frustrating. I still have lotion and room spray in my class closet because somebody gives me some almost every year. 6y
EmilyChristine @Daisey that‘s so funny! I love the smell! Our store was closed all summer but opened a few weeks ago. It‘s hard not to buy everything! 6y

I was really hoping that the over-judgemental, often condescending protagonist would have been tamped down in the second of the series, but it seems to have gotten worse. I'd call her a curmudgeon even.

(I am willing to concede that it might be worsened because I'm listening to it as an audiobook, and it might be that I would read differently than it is voiced).

melissanorr I didn't like her in the first book and hadn't planned to read the second. If you had said she got significantly better, I might have changed my mind. 7y
drokka @melissanorr I'd hoped this one would have been better too. I won't be reading the third. Normally I'll give an author three books before giving up, with one exception - a completely unlikeable protagonist. This is only the second series (the other was a different author) where book two was the end for me. 7y
mabell I agree - though it made it a little easier to take when I remembered she was somewhat channeling Holmes. I don't know if I would read the second or not. 🤔 7y

drokka @mabell I gave some allowance for the channelling of Holmes, but having also read two other female characters that channel him (A Study in Charlotte and A Study in Scarlet Women) I feel like the author maybe tried to hard and it comes off as hostile rather than a low level EQ. 7y
Amie I bailed on the first book partly because of the main character's personality. 7y
mabell That is a good point! I have A Study in Charlotte on my TBR, so it will be interesting to compare. 7y

I think Gemma grew on me a little more in this book. She's sometimes quite annoying being a female S. Holmes without the mystique of a century or so to back her up, but she developed a little more in this story. To tell the truth, I wasn't sure I was going to continue the series after the first book, but am very glad I did. No sophomore slump here.

A little late starting #litsypartyofone, but I'm in. Busy day today, but I'm hoping to finish this book and another by Monday night.
