Funny, highly inventive, and deeply moving, theMystery.doc is a vast, shapeshifting literary novel that reads like a page-turner. Its a comedy, a tragedy, a big book about America. Its unlike anything youve read before. Rooted in the western United States in the decade post-9/11, the book follows a young writer and his wife as he attempts to write the follow-up to his first novel, searching for a form that will express the world as it has become, even as it continually shifts all around him. Pop-up ads, search results, web chats, snippets of conversation, lines of code, and film and television stills mix with alchemical manuscripts, classical works of literatureand the story of a man who wakes up one morning without any memory of who he is, his only clue a single blank document on his computer called themystery.doc. From text messages to The Divine Comedy, first love to artificial intelligence, the book explores what makes us humanthe stories we tell, the memories we hold on to, the memories we loseand the relationships that give our lives meaning. Part love story, part memoir, part documentary, part existential whodunit, theMystery.doc is a modern epic about the quest to find something lasting in a world where everythingand everyoneis in danger of slipping away.

Did much better today 🙂
Basically I read the entire day with little naps in-between

Total time so far for #20in4 - 13h02m
I finished Still Life; and as always Val delivered an excellent piece of work.

TheMystery.doc is quite intriguing. It's very disjointed, but I can't seem to put it down.

What a thrill this is!

It‘s monumental, intriguing, can get creepy, and is quite, quite sad: as this is really a book about death and dying—exploring that territory—so there is immense gravitas, and McIntosh succeeds in creating something that is, without embellishment, profound.

Here we have over 1,600 pages that feel like 300. I normally have two books going at once, but didn‘t want to share this reading experience with anything else.

Such. Good. Prose. 👏

The problem is our society. We have no place for the schizophrenic. In the native cultures there were the holy men, the shamans, they were protected and revered, and you‘d bring your little papoose to him for a blessing or a prophecy, and the society would make sure he was fed and clothed because he sure as hell couldn‘t take care of himself. But now we leave them to fend for themselves.

Nuwanda @TrishB It goes more quickly than you'd think, and I believe it's still free for Kindle right now. 6y
TrishB I ran over to Amazon but wasn‘t free 😔 maybe not UK? Or offer finished. 6y
Nuwanda @TrishB Bummer! Yeah, I don't know if the offer was good in the U.K. It's supposed to be through April 2 here. 6y

readordierachel Who can resist a free book? Not me. 6y
AlaMich @MicheleinPhilly No, something about reading a book and then responding to it in some way, as a contest. I dunno, I‘m probably making it up. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
MicheleinPhilly @AlaMich AH! That‘s funny. I find myself constantly prefacing statements with “I may have dreamt this...” 👵🏼 6y

Update: I finished this monster yesterday and... My weak core and bad back are thrilled not to be hauling it around in my bag anymore.

As for the book itself? I was intrigued by some of the narrative threads but don't feel fulfilled at all by most of them. It felt like there were several books happening at once and McIntosh just didn't bother finishing any one of them.

Or I just didn't get it. What do you think?

About a third of the way through this monster, still trying to work out how all the threads come together but I'm a sucker for anything that ventures outside the confines of traditional narrative sructure!

So, I popped into the bookstore after work and this happened...a 1653 page epistolary novel. And it looks kind of wonderful.
