Night Film: A Novel | Marisha Pessl
NEW YORK TIMESBESTSELLERNAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR Cosmopolitan Kirkus Reviews BookPageA page-turning thriller for readers of Stephen King, Gillian Flynn, and Stieg Larsson, Night Film tells the haunting story of a journalist who becomes obsessed with the mysterious death of a troubled prodigythe daughter of an iconic, reclusive filmmaker. On a damp October night, beautiful young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding Ashleys life and death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary, reclusive cult-horror-film director Stanislas Cordovaa man who hasnt been seen in public for more than thirty years. For McGrath, another death connected to this seemingly cursed family dynasty seems more than just a coincidence. Though much has been written about Cordovas dark and unsettling films, very little is known about the man himself. Driven by revenge, curiosity, and a need for the truth, McGrath, with the aid of two strangers, is drawn deeper and deeper into Cordovas eerie, hypnotic world. The last time he got close to exposing the director, McGrath lost his marriage and his career. This time he might lose even more. Night Film, the gorgeously written, spellbinding new novel by the dazzlingly inventive Marisha Pessl, will hold you in suspense until you turn the final page.Praise for Night Film Night Film has been precision-engineered to be read at high velocity, and its energy would be the envy of any summer blockbuster. Bk5 of my #JumpStart2020 is a #MountTBR2020 & a #BeatTheBacklist2020 read plus I think someone on Litsy is doing a challenge involving doorstoppers. Can anyone confirm that? This book has been on my #MountTBRStacksOfDoom for at least 2yrs, for one reason or another I‘ve just passed it by. I loved her other novel, Neverworld Wake, so it‘s this guys turn. It‘s told with news clippings, internet pages etc as part of the story so should be interesting

Lizpixie @ChasingOm is that the one? Do you remember who created it? I‘m doing so many challenges this year I‘ve forgotten🤔 5d
cariashley I love love LOVE this book! You‘re in for a treat! 5d
JackOBotts This was my first finish of 2020 and I LOVED it. I also loved her debut, which unfolds with similar multi-media style 5d

#BookishProblems - Night Film is my Book Club‘s next selection and I‘m devouring it (not surprised as this was my pick and I‘ve been waiting to read it for some time...). Our meeting is in February (FEBRUARY!!)...do I stop now and lose momentum or just say f**k it and hope I can remember it all when it‘s time to discuss...I think it may be the latter... #BadTiming

Zelma Keep reading and take notes. 😁 3w
JackOBotts @Zelma - that‘s what I‘m thinking! I‘ve been good with notes so far, but I always struggle to keep going once I‘m in the thick of things. 🤞🏼 3w
Linsy I agree with @zelma! Keep the momentum!! When I try to stop and do things at the right time, I inevitably lose momentum. Now I want to read this one. I have been eyeing it. Stacked! 3w

Dark thriller investigating the mysterious death of a famous film director's daughter. The book has excerpts of film blogs, newspaper clippings, and photos to support the story. There were some good twists and overall, even though some parts were unbelievable, I enjoyed it.

⭐⭐⭐
I didn't not like this book. I was slightly confused at first and found myself Googling Cordova. The biggest issue I had was this feeling that I had missed something vital and had to fight the urge to re-read the entire book. I did enjoy the writing itself. It wasn't a book I found boring but, because of my confusion and the length of the book (592 pages), I spent way too long trying to finish a book I wasn't 100% in love with.

This was dark, gritty, and full of mystery. It's the type of book that will stay with you for a long time. I wasn't overly thrilled with the ending, as it almost felt like a cliff-hanger, but it was still really well written. Just when you thought you knew what was going on, Pessl threw in more plot twists and introduced new characters... any one of whom could be responsible. 5🌟

#BookMail Pt2 I read the authors newer novel, Neverworld Wake, last year & it was one of my #BestOf2018 picks. I heard about this previous novel on Litsy, where people seemed to either love it or hate it, but it definitely got people talking. I figure if I loved Neverworld Wake, I‘m probably going to love this too. It‘s been described as “if Stephen King wrote a biography about a director with the genius of Kubrick & the madness of Dali”🤔

I‘m calling it for #24B4Monday. I made it just over 17 hours.

I finished nothing, I listened to 51% of Crooked Kingdom, read more than half of Evelyn Hardcastle, and bit a tiny chunk out of Night Film.

Dr._Who_number10 Love your Jack cup!❤️❤️❤️ 1y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Dr._Who_number10 Thanks! It‘s one of my favorites. 1y
TheBookAddict I‘m reading Evelyn Hardcastle as well! Didn‘t get very far in it, but I‘m definitely hooked. I need to know what‘s going on! 1y

I did 90 minutes of HIIT training at 6 am so I could do this the rest of the day.

Pickpick

This was such a unique book. The mixed media really worked here and the author truly developed a dark horror that sucks you in when you start and doesn‘t let up until you finish. It had a great ending that was unexpected and the characters were excellent. Everything had a purpose and I really liked that part of it!
