The Boats of the Glen Carrig
The Boats of the Glen Carrig | William Hope Hodgson
11 posts | 8 read | 7 to read
The Boats of the "Glen-Carrig" is a horror novel written by William Hope. The novel is written archaically, and pretends to be an authentic account of shipwreck survivors in 1757. Thrilling and masterfully written, this book will appeal to lovers of frightening fiction, and will be of special interest to fans and collectors of Hope's chilling work. The chapters of this book include: 'The Land of Lonesomeness', 'The Ship in the Creek', 'The Thing That Made Search', 'The Two Faces', 'The Great Storm', 'The Weed-Choked Sea', 'The Island in the Weed', 'The Noises in the Valley', etcetera. This book was first published in 1907, and is being republished now in an affordable, high-quality, modern edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned biography of the author.

in the modern era, all authors think they're the ultimate geniuses for making people in existential struggles whine and badger each other. william hope hodgson, in a stroke of wisdom rarely seen, instead has his people collaborate, and fight muck men from the sargassum continent

This was so creepy and I loved it! I was periodically yelling YEARGH out loud when the crew encountered strange new creatures. I did think the book wrapped up somewhat abruptly, but that's OK. Glad to have a scary book that I could actually read 😉 Thanks, @SerialReader!

Solid Halloween read, even if it did get repetitive and a little boring toward the end. Planning to continue my Halloween fun by snuggling up with my dog and some scary movies on my new Shudder streaming service 🎃👻

I really liked this creepy story... mysterious shipwrecks, a seemingly haunted island, monster-sized sea creatures, and terrifying slug-like things bent on eating people. Lots of adventure made up for a few pages of technical ship talk that made my eyes glaze over.

Another fun #serialreader selection!

Soubhiville Serial reader is pretty awesome. I think I‘ll check this one out! 6y
JazzFeathers Hey, this sounds good. I'll have to try it out 😊 6y

rabbitprincess This is on my read-later list! It might have to be my next serial! 6y
rabbitprincess @CatLass007 It's an app that breaks up work of classic literature (public domain) into chunks that can be read in 10 to 15 minutes. When you subscribe to a serial, it sends you a new chunk each day. I find it really helpful for tackling longer works! (edited) 6y
AlaMich Is this long? I tend to stick to short pieces on Serial, for whatever reason. This sounds great for spooky season!! 🎃 6y
sprainedbrain @AlaMich only 25 issues... I had planned to read one per day until Halloween, but as usual, I started reading ahead when it got exciting. 😂 6y
sprainedbrain @CatLass007 @rabbitprincess explained it perfectly! I‘ve been reading on Serial for more than a year. I try to have one book in progress there at all times, and have so far read 21 books in chunks. 😃 6y
CatLass007 @sprainedbrain @rabbitprincess Thank you both for the explanation. I‘ll definitely check it out! 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Always looking for a good book on Serial - this sounds like just what I need! 6y

For my October horror Serial read, I was going to do the buddy read of the white worm thing by Stoker... but then I saw the terrible reviews and comments about racism on Goodreads, so I decided to go with some William Hope Hodgson instead.

I‘m two issues in, and it‘s got me sufficiently creeped out. 😃

batsy Oh dear, didn't look up reviews for the White Worm and wasn't aware of the issues 😕 7y
sprainedbrain @batsy I was just going on to mark it as ‘currently reading‘ and noticed... 😬 7y

So, this is one of the authors that inspired and influenced Lovecraft - which is amazing and obvious fairly quickly. It's awesome. Full review (with spoilers) at http://theghastlygrimoire.com/2017/09/09/book-review-the-boats-of-the-glen-carri...
