Echo Desjardins, a 13 year-old Metis girl, is struggling with her feelings of loneliness while attending a new school and living with a new foster family. Then an ordinary day in Mr. Bee's history class turns extraordinary and Echo's life will never be the same. During Mr. Bee's lecture, Echo finds herself transported to another time and place--a bison hunt on the Saskatchewan prairie--and back again to the present. In the following weeks, Echo slips back and forth in time. She visits a Metis camp, travels the old fur trade routes, and experiences the perilous and bygone era of the Pemmican wars.Pemmican Wars is the first graphic novel in a new series, A Girl Called Echo, by Governor General Award-winning writer, and author of Highwater Press' The Seven Teaching Stories, Katherena Vermette.

Gorgeous illustrations. Not enough words for me but I am new to the graphic novel realm. I liked the historical bits. #IndigAthon21

In these 3 short graphic novels, Echo escapes the problems of life by time traveling through dreams & daydreams inspired by her history teacher‘s lessons of the Métis resistances against Canadian expansion. Knowing extremely little about Canadian history, I felt I learned a lot but was lost occasionally. I still rated 4 stars because the illustrations were well done & I am sure this is vital history. There is a 4th installment I haven‘t read yet.

Read all three of these last night, and found them interesting but unsatisfying. Echo is a modern Métis high schooler who finds herself in historical events when dreaming or zoning out. These books assume a certain amount of knowledge of Canadian and First Nations indigenous history that I, an American, don‘t have. As a result I found them a bit too disjointed to follow easily. The modern timelines and art are great, though.

Trying to find more First Nations/native American books for my classroom. Nicely done graphic novel and I‘m excited that this is just volume 1 and there are more to come. And I learned a lot about Métis culture.

Hey Book Butterflies!🦋

Meant to post again yesterday, but got super engrossed in my books. And in growling at everyone who interrupted me, at the worst moments. 😅 One was this comic.
Echo, a 13-year-old Metis girl, is separated from her mother & trying to adjust to a new home & school. One who begins falling in & out time! Cycling between past & present, she's slowly learning more of her culture & its history.
😖! I NEED the next issue! #24in48

The artwork is absolutely beautiful (especially the vibrant colours). I love seeing schools teaching Canadian history and acknowledging everything done to Metis but also looking at the loss of identity a lot of ppl have after Residential Schools, multigenerational trauma and The 60s Scoop.

I'm always a bit nervous when a beloved writer makes the shift into comics, but Katherena Vermette nails it. She and artist Scott B. Henderson introduce us to Echo, a 13-year-old Métis girl who starts to learn about her heritage when she time travels to key moments in the Pemmican Wars.

The history angle's good, but Echo herself sets this comic apart. I recognized her instantly because the creators make her feel REAL, on every level.

Comics like this are an easy way for me to learn history. 13-year-old Echo is in a new foster home, attending a new school. She combats loneliness by plugging into music. Brief time travel episodes take her back two centuries, where she learns about an aspect of her Métis heritage: the pemmican wars. The final few pages show Echo visiting her mom in some kind of facility, and left me wanting to read further volumes. #Indigenous #ownVoices

Ha! I just spotted a poster of the cover of Vermette‘s The Break in the background. And that might be a 7 Generations comics cover above and to the left of it (below the Métis flag). #Indigenous

Echo has a teacher who is queer, Mx Francois. I love this panel with the rainbow flag on one side of their classroom door and the Métis flag on the other. There‘s also a Métis flag inside Echo‘s history classroom, and one sewn on the shoulder of her jacket. #LGBTQ #Indigenous

Viewed as a progression from his work in Betty, to Sugar Falls, to 7 Generations, and now this, Scott Henderson‘s art keeps improving. I like what he (and colourist Donovan Yaciuk) did in this spread. Echo Desjardins is a Métis from the 21st c who time travels back to 1814. The red plaid jacket at her waist nicely echoes the swirling red dress and red sashes of the Métis people hunting bison on the prairie. #Indigenous

dixi_e What did you think of the story? 7y
dixi_e (The writing) 7y
Lindy @dixi_e It‘s meant as a teaching story, so it‘s didactic. I feel like I am just getting to know Echo, getting a glimpse of her foster home situation. Her loneliness at school comes through strongly. The final 3 pages, with her mother, are what makes me want to read the next volume. 7y
dixi_e It is. I felt it read like it was written by people overly familiar with the history and that meant there were disconnects or gaps in how it was shared. I found it hard to follow. That said, I agree with you about Echo and the final scene. I also liked how inclusive it was in regard to characters. 7y

This was a great start to a new series, and I can't wait to read volume 2. This is the best work I have seen from Henderson. Vermette has crafted a believable story of a Metis girl named Echo who travels back in time through her dreams as she learns Metis history. Loved seeing the enby teacher in there as well!

Echo finds herself sent back in time to a hunting party of Métis, Indigenous, and European freemen during the Pemmican Wars. She watches the party hunt and fight and she makes pemmican with a girl her own age, learning about the people and the time period in person even while she learns about it in class when she comes back to the modern setting. #PemmicanWars #netgalley #LetsGetGraphicWeeklongMarathon #Canada #readaroundtheworld

readinginthedark @ReadOrDieRachel It is! Not a lot happens in this volume, but it‘s a good taste to get you started. I‘m hoping the next volume will have more about Echo‘s background, too! 7y

This was a quick read with a significant number of pages detailing Echo‘s new school, new home and new transportation experiences without words. Embarrassingly, it‘s the first time I had heard of the Pemmican Wars or, for that matter, pemmican. A book that needs to be in schools, this brought to life both a history and a present many Canadians know little (or nothing) about. #letsgetgraphicweeklongmarathon
