So this one wasn‘t what I had expected, but I really enjoyed it. Rina‘s father dies suddenly, and the graphic novel goes back and forth between her going home for his funeral in the Manila and flashbacks from her childhood in the Philippines. I knew very little about the revolution that took place there in 1986 and learned a lot. Rina also explores the influence of 80s pop culture on her life 👇👇👇

A poignant memoir in #graphicnovel format by comics artist Lorina Mapa, who was a teenager in 1986 during the People Power Revolution in the Philippines. I was moved to tears by her portrayal of the events, the millions who gathered, kneeling & praying in front of tanks, to put an end to the Marcos dictatorship. Moving back & forth between her childhood & adult married life with 4 kids in Canada, this is also about rediscovering oneself. 🇨🇦🇵🇭

I'm not one for graphic novels usually but she had me at Duran Duran, this memoir is about growing up in the 80s in the Philippines, against the backdrop of the revolution and at its heart a memorial to her father who seemed pretty sweet. There are some laugh out loud moments that you might need to have been a teen in the 80s or raised Catholic to truly appreciate.

When Lorina Mapa's father is killed in a traffic collision, she returns to the Philippines and spirals down into childhood memories. Her account of that time is a chronicle of grief, of being young in the 80s, and of reconnecting with her most essential self. It's also a great primer on Filipino society from a certain angle (Mapa's family is rich), and her account of the People Power Revolution moved me to tears.

This week's library haul includes three comics by women, a movie based on a book, and an algebra thing that looked like fun.

Here‘s the thing: if there are so many words in a graphic novel, I feel like I should be reading an actual novel, than why make it a graphic novel? I‘m not even paying attention to the images. I didn‘t get very far in this one either, and I‘ve actually never finished a memoir graphic novel. They just don‘t jive with me.

I wonder if Southeast Asians of a certain generation think of Imelda Marcos, her shoe collection, & the Marcos regime after seeing those lyrics?! ?? Tagged graphic novel is about growing up amidst the People Power Revolution/Yellow Revolution that lead to the end of the regime, & it's gone straight to my tbr.

Just now, I finished the tagged book which is a graphic memoir of what it‘s like to grow up in the 80s in the #Philippines with the Edsa Revolution as backdrop. My 16 year old has decided to use the Philippine Martial Law as her topic for her History project here in Singapore (School of the Arts). I think this graphic memoir will prove to be somewhat helpful in providing her a personalized overview of what it‘s like.

Bittersweet memoir of an important relationship in a historic moment in time. Also a basic primer on the People Power Movement. Mapa came from a wealthier family, which I add not to invalidate any of her experiences, but rather to point out a slight disconnection I felt while I read this.

I see a lot of myself in this book. In fact, I see someone who even looks like me! 😜

I really loved this graphic novel - it made the People Power Revolution real for me in a way that I hadn't quite realized before, and it made me even talk to my parents about their own experiences during that time.
