Duran Duran, Imelda Marcos, and Me
Duran Duran, Imelda Marcos, and Me | Lorina Mapa
20 posts | 13 read | 26 to read
A graphic memoir about growing up in the Philippines in the 1980s with Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Imelda Marcos and the EDSA Revolution. When she learns of her beloved father's fatal car accident, Mapa flies to Manila to attend his funeral. His sudden death sparks childhood memories. Weaving the past with the present, Mapa entertains with stories about religion, pop culture, adolescence, social class and politics, including her experiences of the 1986 People Power Revolution which made headlines around the world. It is a love letter to her parents, family, friends, country of birth, and in the end, perhaps even to herself.

So this one wasn‘t what I had expected, but I really enjoyed it. Rina‘s father dies suddenly, and the graphic novel goes back and forth between her going home for his funeral in the Manila and flashbacks from her childhood in the Philippines. I knew very little about the revolution that took place there in 1986 and learned a lot. Rina also explores the influence of 80s pop culture on her life 👇👇👇

AmberWB And the importance music played during her adolescence. There is even a sweet discography in the back of the book. And since Duran Duran is in the title, I had to show off my Simon LeBon funko. 😁😁 5y

A poignant memoir in #graphicnovel format by comics artist Lorina Mapa, who was a teenager in 1986 during the People Power Revolution in the Philippines. I was moved to tears by her portrayal of the events, the millions who gathered, kneeling & praying in front of tanks, to put an end to the Marcos dictatorship. Moving back & forth between her childhood & adult married life with 4 kids in Canada, this is also about rediscovering oneself. 🇨🇦🇵🇭

“Tiger, Tiger” is a little-known instrumental by Duran Duran. […]
I once played that song 27 times in a row at full volume, lying on my bed, my head in that timeless space … no beginning, no end, no Rina. Just the music and the feeling that I was everything and I was also nothing. Really … who needs drugs?

I'm not one for graphic novels usually but she had me at Duran Duran, this memoir is about growing up in the 80s in the Philippines, against the backdrop of the revolution and at its heart a memorial to her father who seemed pretty sweet. There are some laugh out loud moments that you might need to have been a teen in the 80s or raised Catholic to truly appreciate.

When Lorina Mapa's father is killed in a traffic collision, she returns to the Philippines and spirals down into childhood memories. Her account of that time is a chronicle of grief, of being young in the 80s, and of reconnecting with her most essential self. It's also a great primer on Filipino society from a certain angle (Mapa's family is rich), and her account of the People Power Revolution moved me to tears.

This week's library haul includes three comics by women, a movie based on a book, and an algebra thing that looked like fun.

GrilledCheeseSamurai RPO wasn't as good as the book (they never are) but it was still a damn entertaining watch! 👍 6y
xicanti @GrilledCheeseSamurai I'm looking forward to it. I figure it'll be a spectacle, if nothing else! 6y

Here‘s the thing: if there are so many words in a graphic novel, I feel like I should be reading an actual novel, than why make it a graphic novel? I‘m not even paying attention to the images. I didn‘t get very far in this one either, and I‘ve actually never finished a memoir graphic novel. They just don‘t jive with me.

"These expensive, these is red bottoms, these is bloody shoes" #bodakyellow

I wonder if Southeast Asians of a certain generation think of Imelda Marcos, her shoe collection, & the Marcos regime after seeing those lyrics?! ?? Tagged graphic novel is about growing up amidst the People Power Revolution/Yellow Revolution that lead to the end of the regime, & it's gone straight to my tbr.

Suet624 If we just imagined her love of shoes being the equivalent of our love of books would we have any sympathy for her? I have 3 pairs of shoes to my name but boxes and boxes of books. 😀 7y

batsy @saresmoore @vivastory It does sound great! 7y
batsy @Mdargusch She and her husband were really something 🤪 7y
batsy @Suet624 Haha, I totally get that! But no sympathy for her for cheerleading her spouse's rule of terror and siphoning millions off the people to fund their parade of wealth. 7y
batsy @BarbaraBB 😂😂😂 7y
Suet624 @batsy oh no, of course not. 7y
Centique @Cinfhen @batsy OMG yes to Duran Duran! Also have to stack this book 👍 7y

Happy 2-year Litsyversary and 1-year freelanciversary @RachelO here are a few of my #inbetween books for your #giveaway. Just now, I finished the tagged book which is a graphic memoir of what it‘s like to grow up in the 80s in the #Philippines with the Edsa Revolution as backdrop. Fits the #ReadAroundTheWorld for July by @JenP - As for books I‘d love to receive: Oliver Loving and Every Note Played

rockpools I thought 'I must find a copy of that' right before I read your blurb and realised it was a giveaway entry! Sounds perfect! Afraid I'm just giving away the books in the pic this time - sorry - have reworded to try & make it clearer. Any of those you fancy? 7y
GatheringBooks @RachelO ahhh! got it. i reworded mine now as well to indicate what caught my eye. :) 7y
rockpools @GatheringBooks Brilliant- thanks. My first giveaway & I'm learning what I'm doing wrong after I've done it 😉 7y
GatheringBooks @RachelO absolutely no worries - thank you for even doing this and paying it forward. :) 7y

My 16 year old has decided to use the Philippine Martial Law as her topic for her History project here in Singapore (School of the Arts). I think this graphic memoir will prove to be somewhat helpful in providing her a personalized overview of what it‘s like.

TheBookgeekFrau Love the title😊 7y

Bittersweet memoir of an important relationship in a historic moment in time. Also a basic primer on the People Power Movement. Mapa came from a wealthier family, which I add not to invalidate any of her experiences, but rather to point out a slight disconnection I felt while I read this.

Erin7 I totally agree. And this is the music that stays close to your heart for the rest of your life in my view. 7y
Gezemice This was definitely the time when I listened to the most music. However this was also the 80ies, and I can also definitely say that I like both later and earlier music way better. 7y
Izai.Amorim Yes. I still buy a lot of music but my favorite is from that time. 7y

I really loved this graphic novel - it made the People Power Revolution real for me in a way that I hadn't quite realized before, and it made me even talk to my parents about their own experiences during that time.
