“Tales for Very Picky Eaters” by Josh Schneider is a funny F book that tells the story of James who is a very picky eater! He doesn‘t enjoy broccoli, eggs, or oatmeal. In order to get James to eat the foods he thinks he doesn‘t enjoy, his dad finds very creative ways to get him to try them. Pick up this Geisel Award winning book and try using it for a RA in the classroom! #UCFLAE3414F19

abbie-cadabbie This lesson plan would pair well with this story because it includes discussion topics to use before reading, during, and after reading. It also includes vocabulary and even craft ideas! https://readingtokids.org/Books/BookView.php?pag=5&bookID=00000985 5y
abbie-cadabbie The UDL strategy I would use would be to activate or supply background knowledge (3.1) I would talk to the students prior to reading to see if they know what a picky eater is and if any of them can relate. As for my ESOL strategy, I would link the lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge (4) This would make the students feel more included. 5y
DrSpalding Another cute image for a book that could be used in a science unit about nutrition. Helpful resource and of course you are including effective teaching strategies, universal design and English learner strategies. This would be an easy book to access prior knowledge and facilitate real world connections. 5y

“What if the only thing you had to eat was DIRT?”
This quote is funny. It is when the dad is telling his son to try a new food and he doesn‘t want to, so the dad says something about eating dirt (which we all know is gross.)

This is a great book for the classroom AND for parents to read to their kids at home. It‘s about how important it is to try new foods especially for young children, and it is portrayed in such a funny way where kids will laugh!

I loved this story. It could be read to children when they‘re young and developing new taste buds. It can be read to children about being picky eaters and how it‘s important to try new foods.

🙈🙈🙈 Seen this online, and knew I had to share it on Litsy! This makes me laugh because a lot of my friends are the PICKIEST! ❤️💕☺️

I only refuse to eat one of these things. Steak

I also don't like milk, and will not drink it but will use it for baking. ( with the exception being in my cheerios)

HOW MANY things do you hate on this list!? #pickyeaters

AllenTStClair Raw fish, cooked fish, oysters. 🤢 7y
That-Bookish-Hiker The only thing I don‘t like is Milk. I wouldn‘t drink it when I was younger. I hated the smell of it and now, because I never drank it, I am lactose intolerant. 🤨 7y
britt_brooke Ferociously hate mushrooms and mustard. 7y
See All 39 Comments
GondorGirl I will not eat 42 of those things. Apparently I am the answer to life, the universe, and picky eaters. 7y
Scurvygirl Other than the fact that I'm vegan... I'm not picky! 😹😹😹 7y
Melissa_J I won‘t eat 25 of the foods listed 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y
JoRead The only thing I won't eat is beets and that's not even on this list. I guess I'm not that picky after all 😁 7y
AlaMich Blue cheese, raw fish, and snails. I mean, why do we have to eat snails?? There are lots of other things. Who looked at a snail first and thought, “I bet that slimy thing would be tasty?” (edited) 7y
Karkar 6 so not too bad ☺️ 7y
LazyLibrary Just snails! And technically I've never tried them, so you never know! 😃 7y
rachelm No white chocolate. I'd do the rest! Not mixed together though 😋 7y
CocoReads 22 or so—I counted and then immediately forgot the number. Ranch dressing—yuck. Mushrooms, tomatoes, etc. I have a texture problem with a whole bunch of these things. 7y
TK-421 Not bad; only 8! Top 3: I hate Nutella and ranch dressing and can't have grapefruit because it interferes with most of my meds. 7y
jfalkens I'm a lactose intolerant pescatarian otherwise I'll eat almost everything else 7y
jbhops Eggplant 🤢 and tea are my only ones. And lettuce is spelled wrong. How does that happen??? 😝 7y
Clwojick @That-Bookish-Hiker SAME! Hahah I'm slightly lactose intolerant now too! 😂 7y
Clwojick @JoRead I LOATHE beets! I didn't know that until I decided to do a juice cleanse this past summer 7y
Clwojick @jbhops I know! Luttuse lol! God ol Facebook posts. 7y
Susanita Some of my favorite foods are on this list! I will agree though that tofu is disgusting. 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes I looooooove most of these things!! The only thing I think I would chicken out of is the snails...and I don't really care for ham or tofu, but I'll eat it. 7y
TEArificbooks Never tried snails or tofu, so idk about those. I am not to keen on raw fish. The one I really hate is mushrooms. 7y
RedbagReadbooks @Clwojick I love most of the things on this list but I will share a deep dark secret. I have a strange aversion to peppers 🌶. Specially cutting up bell peppers. The seeds in the center give me the willies. It has taken a decade to get to the point of being able to chop them independently. Now my husband and my eldest son laugh at me. 😁 7y
OrangeMooseReads 5- coconut, vinegar (if it‘s white vinegar or apple cider vinegar), watermelon, ham, and pork. I don‘t care to have real mayo, but I won‘t refuse it. I also can‘t really deal with tomatoes, I won‘t refuse them if they are mixed into something but I‘m not going to have them on a burger or salad. Also don‘t care for dark chocolate (edited) 7y
shadowspeak17 There are 20 things on this list that I will not eat. 😂 7y
dragondrool Thirteen. 7y
Pamwurtzler Coconut, olives, tofu. So just 3. 7y
Dragon I don‘t like raw fish, snails 🐌 or raw oysters. I‘ll eat smoked oysters. So 2&1/2 things I won‘t eat. 🐉 7y
SandyW Before I went over to the dark side (vegan) there was only 1 thing I didn't consume on that list... it was coffee. Coffee gives me terrible palpitations. 7y
DreesReads Eggplant and Brussels sprouts are the only ones I truly hate. But fish, shellfish, and bell peppers all don‘t get along with my digestive system. I can eat limited amounts of cooked fish/shellfish, as long as I can‘t smell it. And by limited, I mean a small amount once a month! 7y
xicanti Only three for me: pork, ham, and onions. The onions thing makes me look REALLY picky, though, because so many chefs don't seem to understand how to cook without them. I have to avoid a lot of prepackaged foods and ask for ingredient changes in restaurants. I can deal when they're cooked down into a paste, as in Indian food, but otherwise I can't handle the mouth feel or the flavour. 7y
Bklover Raw fish, oysters and snails. Otherwise. Love them all! 7y
GrilledCheeseSamurai I will happily eat everything on this list. Being a cook by profession will do that, I suppose. 😊 7y
Eggs Soy sauce, oysters, snails and raw fish----No Can Do 7y
laurieluna 13, but thats mainly because I don't like meat or shellfish. Fine with tuna, salmon and cod etc though. Also hate celery 😷 watery nonsense! 😂 7y
Jen_Reads There are 54 things I won‘t eat on there. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 7y
Jadams89 2 - raw fish and snails 🐌 7y
Hollie Won‘t even put milk on my cereal. I make my son pour his own milk because I don‘t like to touch it! Milk is so gross. 7y
readinginthedark Mayonnaise, snails, Brussels sprouts, and olives! 🤢 7y
Amandajoy Ketchup & ranch dressing. I also don‘t like olives, but I keep trying them because I think one day maybe I‘ll like them. 7y

This book is TL specifically folklore by Josh Schneider and was awarded a Geisel 2012, I would use this book with my S teaching strategy. UDL 2.1 and ESOL 15 http://www.theclassroombookshelf.com/2012/01/2012-theodor-seuss-geisel-award-win... #ucflae3414f17

This silly RF picture book by Josh Schneider is the recipient of the 2011 Geisel Award and is great to use for RA, S, DR, RT and AS. There are a few funny and absurd ‘tales‘ the father of the main character, James, tells James in order to get him to eat things he does not want to consume (broccoli, oatmeal, eggs, milk), as he is a very picky eater. This book is a fun book to read to students because everyone can relate to not wanting to eat

jvinas2 certain food. It also might make kids actually want to try to eat different foods they would not have tried before. I wish I had this book when my little sister was younger and she did not want to eat anything but rice! Providing different methods of visuals using ESOL strategies 4, 16, 22 and UDL guidelines 1.1-1.3 & 2.5 would be beneficial to use while reading the story so that students understand James and his father‘s method of thinking. 7y
jvinas2 This link has different discussion questions to ask before, during and after reading the story, as well as some activities one could do and more: https://www.islma.org/pdf/2014MonarchAwardMasterList/Tales_for_Very%20Picky%20Ea... ; #UCFLAE3414F17 7y
JocelynNolton If you work with kids or have kids of your own, this sounds like a book you NEED in your collection. This book sounds awesome for those stubborn children who are very selective when it comes to their food. 7y
