Slugfest
Slugfest: Inside the Epic, 50-year Battle between Marvel and DC | Reed Tucker
10 posts | 9 read | 14 to read
The first in-depth, behind the scenes book treatment of the rivalry between the two comic book giants. THEY ARE THE TWO TITANS OF THE COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY--the Coke and Pepsi of superheroes--and for more than 50 years, Marvel and DC have been locked in an epic battle for spandex supremacy. At stake is not just sales, but cultural relevancy and the hearts of millions of fans. To many partisans, Marvel is now on top. But for much of the early 20th century, it was DC that was the undisputed leader, having launched the American superhero genre with the 1938 publication of Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel's Superman strip. DC's titles sold millions of copies every year, and its iconic characters were familiar to nearly everyone in America. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman--DC had them all. And then in 1961, an upstart company came out of nowhere to smack mighty DC in the chops. With the publication of Fantastic Four #1, Marvel changed the way superheroes stories were done. Writer-editor Stan Lee, artists Jack Kirby, and the talented Marvel bullpen subsequently unleashed a string of dazzling new creations, including the Avengers, Hulk, Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Iron Man. Marvel's rise forever split fandom into two opposing tribes. Suddenly the most telling question you could ask a superhero lover became "Marvel or DC?" Slugfest, the first book to chronicle the history of this epic rivalry into a single, in-depth narrative, is the story of the greatest corporate rivalry never told. Complete with interviews with the major names in the industry, Slugfest reveals the arsenal of schemes the two companies have employed in their attempts to outmaneuver the competition, whether it be stealing ideas, poaching employees, planting spies, or launching price wars. The feud has never completely disappeared, and it simmers on a low boil to this day. With DC and Marvel characters becoming global icons worth billions, if anything, the stakes are higher now than ever before.

Read a lot of comics history. Although I‘m addicted they mostly end up being dry. This one was a blast though. Never been a DC fan but now I know a bit more about the ethos of the company, I feel a bit sorry for them. 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇 8/10 Batmans

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m fascinated by the development and progression of the comic book industry, especially this rivalry. I can‘t say there‘s a lot of new information here, but Tucker‘s wit and knowledge makes for a very entertaining read! It‘s a good companion to Marvel Comics: The Untold Story (tagged ⬇️).

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This could be something my BF actually reads! 4y

Danielthewriter The biggest comics rivalry EVER. Didn't they also work on comics together too, back in the mid 90's when sales were super low? 4y
britt_brooke @Danielthewriter Yep! Actually I think the first crossover was in the 80s, but they tried it a few times. 4y

🎧🧩 It‘s finished! This was a bit trickier than I thought it was going to be, but very satisfying. 😆Galison Puzzles has some really cool designs. Definitely framing this one.

Maybe I‘m not being fair, but within the first few pages the author starts talking about The Dark Knight Returns and how great and “adult” it was. Those that gush about Frank Miller tend to like different things than I do. Even as a child I didn‘t find The Dark Knight Returns “adult”. It seemed like an absurd, juvenile idea of masculinity. So I don‘t feel like finishing this book.

I‘m actually not a big comic book reader but I thought this book was so much fun. It also gave me some history to consider next time I watch the next big superhero movie. #netgalley

This was a fascinating and entertaining read about the long rivalry between Marvel and DC Comics. It was cool to read about the development of the comic book industry and how those characters have now become pop culture icons who generate billions in film revenue for studios. Would definitely recommend this for superhero fans.

My friend bought this for her boyfriend for his birthday.... I had to take a quick pic before she wrapped it so I could remember to read it. He worked for DC comics and this is definitely in his realm of obsessions. Can‘t wait to pick his brain once he opens this bad boy up!

JoRead DC wins of course 😉😅😅 6y
Aloisi_tribe Oh this is perfect! My oldest son is obsessed with comics right now. I'm definitely adding it to his Christmas list. 6y
