Super Late Bloomer: My Early Days in Transition
Super Late Bloomer: My Early Days in Transition | Julia Kaye
14 posts | 13 read | 9 to read
Artist Julia Kaye's collection of emotionally honest comics documenting the first six months of her gender transition. Julia Kaye created the webcomic Up and Out to document and process her gender transition. Her poignant, relatable comics honestly show how the various issues involved in transitioning--from dealing with low self-esteem, confused family members, and hostile outsiders to moments of self-love and joy--have affected her personally. The comics both educate and inspire, as Julia faces her difficulties head-on and commits to being wholly, authentically who she was always meant to be. This collection brings the entirety of these comics together for the first time and includes a brand new introduction and afterword contextualizing her experience.

The thing I love about these comics is that they capture little moments that affect Julia‘s experience in big ways. Books like this, depicting the humanity of people‘s experiences with all the joy, pain, and self-growth, are so important not only for their representation, but because they reflect a mirror back on society. ⬇️

psalva Kaye does a great job of giving the reader windows into her life experiences at the beginning of her transition, a lot of which are things we might all be able to relate to, to different degrees and in different ways. Highly recommended! 13mo

This coming week is one of the busiest of the last couple years for my partner and I (they‘re defending their doctoral dissertation) so I decided I‘m going to do some rereads of graphic novels/memoirs for #TransRightsReadathon
I‘m going to read these three and as many others as I can. I‘m hoping to have time to make some YouTube shorts for my channel with reviews, and to raise money for T-Time, SC. My TBR for #TransGirlApril will be more robust.

CBee Lots and lots of luck to your partner - such a huge deal!! 🙌🏻 13mo
psalva @CBee thanks! It‘s been a long road. I‘m optimistic and excited, but also stressed… 13mo

TheBookHippie Remember to breathe!!! What an amazing accomplishment for them! 13mo
Reggie Good luck to you both. I got to see a friend defend his master‘s thesis and I was so proud of him. 13mo

I'm joining @Andrew65 in #12Booksof2021, sharing one book every day that was our favorite read from a select month. In June, I read Julia's journal comic and absolutely loved it. So many of her 3 pannel comics were highly relatable even though I'm a cis woman. I also saw the experiences of many of my trans friends in these pages filled with Julia's hopes, successes, and pain. This book became A Fast favorite. #LGBTQ #Comic #JournalComic #Trans

I really enjoyed this collection of journaling comics about Julia's transition. She shares a lot of experiences along her journey, including times when she felt comfortable as herself and times when she experienced strong disphoria. Several of these comics made me year up with happy tears. I can't wait to read her next book! #Comic #JournalComic #LGBTQ #Transgender #TheRainbowShelf

I love the song she‘s singing in the last panel (that whole album is awesome), and her finding comfort in Laura Jane Grace‘s music is so wonderful ❤️ #music #PunkRock #LGBTQ #Trandgender

I‘m loving this comic/journal so much. Haha, had to share the Pokemon Go page since I love playing that game when I‘m out and about. #LGBTQ #PokemonGo #Transgender

This has been a really powerful read for me. It's a great example of how important representation is for someone who doesn't identify with a group. I get to see examples of a life I would never have had a window into.

A nice illustration of my reading life compared to my wife's. I might have to borrow #Becoming from her when she's fine, tho. #comics #weneeddiversebooks #graphicnovels

My heart goes out to the U.S. today, hearing more on serious rollbacks from Trump. 😠 I've been fortunate to have my own identity comfort, in a life that already is really hard to afford. Making gender transition unaffordable is a difficult fear, while all-together we start to feel unimportant and invalid. We need these stories heard! #TransBooks

SpiderCrafts @Samplergal Always, hoping the best for yous and everyone! 💞 Toronto is seeing the education setbacks, but books, films and our voices hopefully will be heard, with positive change in the elections. 6y

JacqMac Thanks for those! Adding them to the TBR. I‘m always looking for something my kid can read and relate to. 6y
SleepyDragon My husband and I just recently reconnected with a long lost friend who is in a very fragile place, and I'm rather worried about how she is handling the reality of a government seemingly against her. And as I think of her, I think about how she isn't alone. 6y
SpiderCrafts @JacqMac Glad to help! I'll keep these posted on my book lists. 6y
SpiderCrafts @NeesyBeth It helps to connect and keep the positives strong. I really hope this turns around soon, sad as it is for progress taking so long to get forward. I'm glad yous are there for your friend! ((hugs)) 💞 6y

This was a great comic read, for another re-read, on Julia's transition story through 2016. Hardships and triumphs. ✨ It can take some time and mishaps. I dread to imagine my folks saying, "This is why being Trans is too hard!" ? Losing efforts of support is sad to be hard. -- The current concluding view for myself, is to honour my luck for confident spirits. Kindness goes a long way, lifting the unseen burdens of another's dysphoria.

This can seem more often true with clothing stores. 😄 Thrift shops are worth checking in with, for lucky finds at a cheap buy. 🛍 I tend to build wish lists on the mall store websites; going in to find all L size, or none.

I've been following Julia Kaye on Twitter, and gladly just found her book, featured on the #PrideMonth shelves in Chapters. ?️‍? I wasn't able to attend Newmarket's Pride weekend, at work. I still find myself telling my folks "I'm working again." in order to rather get to the mall alone for Pride books and clothing stores. As someone who feels totally cloudy about my '5 years later' future, these books are much needed; guiding with time.

Ups and downs and everything in between, this collection from Julia Kaye's webcomic Up and Out takes readers through all the feels! How does she say so much in only three brief panels? Such a powerful memoir. #queerbooks #transbooks
