So far I‘m finding this novel about Pushkin and his wife VERY quick reading. It‘s pretty impossible to believe Natalya is 18 - she seems very aware that she‘s a character in a historical novel. She says things like “as per the conventions of the day”

Oh boy, this was good. I knew going into the story that Alexander dies after a duel with his brother-in-law (not a spoiler) but the lush narrative really set this story up well: Alexander‘s mood swings and intense passion, Natalya‘s longing for fulfillment in a role society already had planned for her. Toward the end, the book felt more intense as the big event loomed and I felt overwhelmed more than once because I was so attached to these two.

I like this thought.

Very good. Even though I didn't know about the real people depicted in this book it was so well written that when I read the historical note in the back it still felt part of the story. As it was well researched as I could see how similar the story was. Thank you #NetGalley for the proof copy.
