The Lost Season of Love and Snow
The Lost Season of Love and Snow: A Novel | Jennifer Laam
16 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
The unforgettable story of Alexander Pushkins beautiful wife, Natalya, a woman much admired at Court, and how she became reviled as the villain of St. Petersburg. At the age of sixteen, Natalya Goncharova is stunningly beautiful and intellectually curious. But while she finds joy in French translations and a history of Russian poetry, her family is more concerned with her marriage prospects. It is only fitting that during the Christmas of 1828 at her first public ball in her hometown of Moscow she attracts the romantic attention of Russias most lauded rebel poet: Alexander Pushkin. Enchanted at first sight, Natalya is already a devoted reader of Alexanders serialized novel in verse, Evgeny Onegin. The most recently published chapter ends in a duel, and she is dying to learn what happens next. Finding herself deeply attracted to Alexanders intensity and joie de vivre, Natalya hopes to see him again as soon as possible. What follows is a courtship and later marriage full of equal parts passion and domestic bliss but also destructive jealousies. When vicious court gossip leads to Alexander dying from injuries earned defending his honor as well as Natalyas in a duel, Natalya finds herself reviled for her alleged role in his death. With beautiful writing and understanding, Jennifer Laam, and her compelling new novel, The Lost Season of Love and Snow, help Natalya tell her side of the storythe story of her greatest love and her inner struggle to create a fulfilling life despite the dangerous intrigues of a glamorous imperial Court.

So far I‘m finding this novel about Pushkin and his wife VERY quick reading. It‘s pretty impossible to believe Natalya is 18 - she seems very aware that she‘s a character in a historical novel. She says things like “as per the conventions of the day”

KarouBlue I enjoyed this one immensely! 4y

TFW you have to cross books off your Christmas wish list because you accidentally bought them on your Kindle 😂 #oops

robinb I do that more often than I‘d like to admit! *Groan* 😩😩😔😳 5y
Susannah That totally sounds like something I‘d do. 🤣 5y
BookishTrish @robinb It‘s weird that I don‘t realize it‘s happened 5y
robinb @BookishTrish I know! What usually happens with me is that I‘ll catch an ebook on sale that‘s on my TBR and snatch it up without marking it off my list. Then it sometimes gets lost among the other “deals” that I snatch up....😖 5y

Oh boy, this was good. I knew going into the story that Alexander dies after a duel with his brother-in-law (not a spoiler) but the lush narrative really set this story up well: Alexander‘s mood swings and intense passion, Natalya‘s longing for fulfillment in a role society already had planned for her. Toward the end, the book felt more intense as the big event loomed and I felt overwhelmed more than once because I was so attached to these two.

KarouBlue Totally agree but I still have 100 pages to go! 6y
intothehallofbooks @thecomfykitchen Yay! I hope you like the ending. I was quite overcome with emotion by the time I finished the book. 6y
KarouBlue @intothehallofbooks Pushkin is my favorite of favorites. The man was fascinating before there was a social media outlet to proclaim his awesomeness! The Alexander Hamilton of Russia!! ❤️ 6y

“Tonight, my spectacles remained safely encased in their fabric cover on the writing table. Mother might allow for a fashionably discreet lorgnette at the ballet, but the last time I tried to wear spectacles outside the house, she told me I looked like a man and threatened to grind the lenses under the heel of her boot.” - Natalya, in 1828

👓 Ahh, so thankful times have changed! 👓

Very good. Even though I didn't know about the real people depicted in this book it was so well written that when I read the historical note in the back it still felt part of the story. As it was well researched as I could see how similar the story was. Thank you #NetGalley for the proof copy.
