I just did not love this. I didn‘t like the characters. It was not my thing.

Quirky, kooky, and a bit weird, this is right in the zone of literary fiction I‘ve been reading lately. A woman gets in a relationship with a junkie from the needle exchange where she volunteers. When he dies, she heads to Taos, NM, a town he thought she‘d enjoy. Each of four interconnected novellas follows the MC‘s relationship with a different oddball resident of Taos. A mild pick, but a fun library backlist find. 👍🏻

4-25-21: My 41st finished book of 2021! This novel comes before Vacuum in the Dark but I didn‘t find that out until after I read that so technically I read them backwards. Regardless, I love the character of Mona, a 24 year old who can‘t seem to get her life in order and cleans houses & takes pictures until she can figure it out. #currentlyreading Hey guys, sorry I haven‘t been on here much. I have been going through a lot with the cats and my health. Please just pray for us all and my mom also. I know I owe a thousand letters to the #jb and #litsylove members. It‘s going to take some time but I will get back to you all. I don‘t know what attracted me to the plot of this book. I just like funny quirky messed up female leads. They remind me of myself. Love you all ❤️❤️❤️❤️

A lot of people complained about the plot and that is bc there really isn‘t one. Mona herself IS the plot, SHE is the story and not a lot of people like those kinds of books. I on the other hand loved it. Especially how vulgar an and quirky it was. I can‘t recommend this one bc this one is definitely a niche read. At your own risk.

Mona, a complex person with a passive career path & a risky hobby that could ultimately jeopardize her business. Totally can relate to being a recipient of the beyond horrified look from someone that made me want to 🤦‍♀️🏃‍♀️...👀😬.

If you like snarky characters, cynicism, & the writing of Alexandra Kleeman- this is for you. So absurd. Mona is a 24yo cleaning lady/artist. She sometimes calls her somewhat estranged father for random conversations in spite of her history with the one-armed man who handed her off to another family member when she was too difficult. She has no friends/social life & her only other human interactions are when she‘s caught snooping/being paid 👇🏻

“She didn‘t believe he actually killed himself. He was too attached to his problems.”

A crazy little story about a young woman trying to get by. Mona is a great character who you don‘t necessarily like but you want to do well. It‘s certainly quirky but not enough to put you off it. I‘m giving “Pretend I‘m Dead” 4 stars.

Here my latest #LibraryHaul !! Since I was going to go ahead and buy the tagged book because I had only seen it in one shop and desperately wanted to get my hands on it, but ended up checking myself & holding back, I was quite excited to see it and others available in the new section 🤓

I discovered this book while randomly searching Amazon for new fiction hardbacks. The story may trigger some readers with vulgar language and subject matter, but I really enjoyed the author‘s dark humor and candor. There are some nice flashes of linguistic genius. There are some chronology issues that annoyed me, but not much. This book was a page-turner that shows a lot of promise from this debut author. 🧤🕸🔨⚰️🔮

Yes, the kooky characters are mildly entertaining but they still don't rescue this quick and quirky read from being a whole load of meandering meh. That said, meandering meh at least meanders - this goes nowhere. It seems to me like a series of loosely connected vignettes that advance neither plot nor character development. There is very little resolution and then it ends just as it seems on the brink of something happening. Frustrating. 🥔🥔🥔

Ok. Weird. The last book I read (Two Little Girls - how DO you tag books in a comment?) mentioned Stick Man, one of my daughter's favourite books. Now the tagged book mentions Fingersmith which I absolutely loved! I'm always having these weird little connection/coincidents in my reading life!
