Redemption in Indigo
Redemption in Indigo | Karen Lord
26 posts | 23 read | 49 to read
Karen Lord 's debut novel, which won the prestigious Frank Collymore Literary Prize in Barbados, is an intricately woven tale of adventure, magic, and the power of the human spirit.Paama 's husband is a fool and a glutton. Bad enough that he followed her to her parents ' home in the village of Makende, now he 's disgraced himself by murdering livestock and stealing corn. When Paama leaves him for good, she attracts the attention of the undying ones - the djombi - who present her with a gift: the Chaos Stick, which allows her to manipulate the subtle forces of the world. Unfortunately, a wrathful djombi with indigo skin believes this power should be his and his alone.Bursting with humor and rich in fantastic detail, Redemption in Indigo is a clever, contemporary fairy tale that introduces readers to a dynamic new voice in Caribbean literature. Lord 's world of spider tricksters and indigo immortals, inspired in part by a Senegalese folk tale, will feel instantly familiar - but Paama 's adventures are fresh, surprising, and utterly original.

I have no idea what rabbit hole I went down that led me to this#audiobook but I really enjoyed it. Recorded Books seems to have done an entire series of these tales told from POC voices. The performances are lovely.

I liked the ending, but as a whole, the book was fine. I wasn't particularly invested in the characters and the writing style wasn't my favorite

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amazing! This story was beautifully written! It‘s about a woman who is given the Chaos Stick by a djombi. The Indigo Lord is not happy that she has such power so he seeks to find her in order to get it back. It‘s a great story that reminded me a little bit of Neil Gaiman. Loved and would honestly read again.

AllisonM89 I'm so excited to read this now!! 4y
mollyrotondo @AllisonM89 I really thought it was wonderful! The style of storytelling had a little bit of humor in it to keep things light. But still dealt with heavier human emotions without feeling like a weight was on my chest. I‘d love to read more by her. 4y

My goal will be to get my #bookspin and#doublespin books in or one of those plus my book club book (Redemption in Indigo) @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks I still need to read my June picks!!! 4y
AllisonM89 Those were the first books i read this month! #Bookspin definitely helps with deciding what to read next! 4y
TheAromaofBooks Well, I was still busy reading May's list, so there's that! 😂 4y

AllisonM89 @TheAromaofBooks I'm new to #bookspin and knowo there's no way I'm possibly getting through 20 books in a month lol 4y
TheAromaofBooks Well I also did a pretty bad job planning my own challenge for myself because I included several books that had sequels & tried to read them all, so my “20 books“ was actually closer to twice that haha I have zero self-control! 4y
Sace In theory this Readathon is an excuse to get a jump start on monthly challenges I've joined. This month it did help with the #ReadYourSign challenge, but my second bookspin book is languishing. I should probably pick shorter books for my list 🙄 4y
Sace So to sum up, I started #CYOReadathon to augment and enhance monthly challenges. So for me it's never about quantifying my reading. I'm on a personal anti quantity mission. 4y

This was recommended by my bibliologist from myTBR, Book Riot‘s personalised recommendation service, and I have wanted to read it for ages. This is probably the book I have been most excited about this readathon

Thunderstormy first day of vacation means sleeping in then finishing Redemption in Indigo. Only had a few chapters left so I didn't want to pack it.

This was also my L for #litsyatoz and my 2010 for #192019challenge - which means I am finished the 2010s until we hit 2018 releases.

Marchpane This book sounds fascinating! 7y
llwheeler @Marchpane It was excellent! Very folk tale tone, so if that's something you like then i would recommend this 7y

Day 25 #readingwomenmonth - rainbow spines/lgbtq. I went with rainbow spines! I admit I just picked 'em for colour, I don't think these books are lgbtq except for Dreams of Shreds and Tatters (dark and very good). Redemption in Indigo is still tbr so not sure.

This was a charming retelling of a Senegalese folktale about a young woman who is given the power to control Chaos and goes on a journey with the djombi to understand what it means to have this power. Themes of choice, chance, free will, and duty. This story was a little shaggy and meandering but I think that was part of the point.

alisahar For the #ReadHarder challenge, this fits "all point-of-view characters are people of color" and "a character of color goes on a spiritual journey." 8y

I was recommended this book by GR because I liked "Alif the Unseen", unfortunately Redemption in Indigo doesn't come close to the reaction that I had with Alif. What really bothered me with the book was the omniscient narrator and the narration style in general. At times it felt like the author wanted to modernize the folk tale and if this was the goal, I didn't think it was implemented successfully.

sprainedbrain I was also underwhelmed by this one... 8y
alisahar I just read Alif the Unseen too and had similar reactions. 😕 8y

This was a quick and fun book... reads like fable, with several life lessons sprinkled throughout. It's creatively written, but I felt like the characters could have been fleshed out a little more, and the ending wasn't what I was hoping for. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
