The Lost Carousel of Provence
The Lost Carousel of Provence | Juliet Blackwell
16 posts | 11 read | 18 to read
An artist lost to history, a family abandoned to its secrets, and the woman whose search for meaning unearths it all in a sweeping and expressive story from the New York Times bestselling author of Letters from Paris. Present day, San Francisco. During her free time, professional photographer Cady Drake shoots local carousels, a hobby inspired by a gift that transformed her childhood: a wooden rabbit supposedly created by master French carver Gustave Bayol a century ago. And when she's offered a freelance assignment for a book on the antique merry-go-rounds of Paris, Cady can't refuse the opportunity to visit the famous carousels for the first time.... 1900s, France. In a small town outside of Avignon, a husband and young wife struggle to keep up their ancestral chateau--and start the family they so desperately desire. For the children they hope to have, the Clements hire the famous Bayol to build a carousel, but as the carver and his apprentice work on the beautiful and whimsical creation, fate will entwine them all in unseen ways--for generations to come... Present day, Provence. As Cady's research leads her to the dilapidated Chateau Clement and its fabled carousel that was lost to the ravages of World War II, she will uncover a shocking truth in a set of one-hundred-year-old photographs that could guide her in reuniting a family torn apart by petty jealousies over several generations.

What a great book! Picked it up randomly at the library ages ago and was going to return without reading it but I'm so glad I did. Charming without being sappy!

Trying to decide what to start next - I have 2 library books, an ARC on the kindle, and #lmpbc (although I've already read that book many years ago - the Eyre Affair). Decisions, decisions....

monalyisha The Lost Carousel looks pretty! 🎠 💜 6y
YasmiNova I'm minded to say The Silent Patient, just because of the author's Cypriot roots :) 6y

Such a sweet story!!! A loner all her life, Candy steps outside her comfort zone to follow a mystery and her dream. She finds her place in the world and so much more. While a little slow at times, I‘m so glad I stuck with it!!! 😁💜

I really loved this sweet read! Told from multiple POVs and traveling back and forth in time, we learn about the making of carousels. I enjoyed the characters and the setting, and really just wanted to stay within the pages of this book! I voluntarily reviewed an eARC copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley.

I‘ve been dealing with one of life‘s curveballs, healthwise, so have had a lot of time to read lately. The graphic here shows a few of the books I‘ve finished. This one by Juliet Blackwell was a lovely little diversion. If you enjoy Blackwell‘s other books, you‘ll like this one.

kspenmoll I have enjoyed her books, thanks for referral! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Sending you hugs, from one who understands that type of curveball. ❤️ 7y

I won an ARC of this, and honestly, I‘m on the fence. 20 pages in and there‘s an almost tangible feeling to the book (like, I can practically hear café music) but the author is just rushing the plot. Characters appear like a damn magic trick with little to no context. The contemporary plot is so forced, it feels like I‘m being begged to believe it.
