State of Fear
State of Fear | Michael Crichton
In Paris, a physicist dies after performing a laboratory experiment for a beautiful visitor. In the jungles of Malaysia, a mysterious buyer purchases deadly cavitation technology, built to his specifications. In Vancouver, a small research submarine is leased for use in the waters off New Guinea. And in Tokyo, an intelligence agent tries to understand what it all means. Thus begins Michael Crichton's exciting and provocative technothriller, State of Fear. Only Michael Crichton's unique ability to blend science fact and pulse-pounding fiction could bring such disparate elements to a heart-stopping conclusion. This is Michael Crichton's most wide-ranging thriller. State of Fear takes the reader from the glaciers of Iceland to the volcanoes of Antarctica, from the Arizona desert to the deadly jungles of the Solomon Islands, from the streets of Paris to the beaches of Los Angeles. The novel races forward, taking the reader on a rollercoaster thrill ride, all the while keeping the brain in high gear. Gripping and thought-provoking, State of Fear is Michael Crichton at his very best.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I liked this story for the adventure and the thrills. I will say that I didn‘t love how by the end it sounded like I was being lectured to instead of being told a story. But I did like the story once the lecturing ceased.

Bailedbailed

I took this from a LFL in order to give two books, it‘s my first Chrichton and dang, I‘m bailing. I liked the writing style and storyline but then started questioning what I was reading regarding climate. I googled the book and saw the years-long controversy and damage from disinformation about climate change written into this particular book. I just don‘t want to knowingly read bad info presented as fact inside fiction.

RamsFan1963 I read this years ago and enjoyed it, then I got into reading a lot of non-fiction about climate change and the coming ecological disaster. Only then did I realize how much bad information and down right lies this book tried to put forth. 3y
marleed @RamsFan1963 Boy, I get that. I have to place checks on myself because I‘m aware how influenced I am by eloquent speech and writing. The writing and storyline here is quite intriguing. Last night I kept wondering how this story might have influenced me had I read it in the aughts without knowing to check it against the knowledge of actual scientists. 3y
RamsFan1963 @marleed Crichton is a very persuasive writer. I remember being swayed by his denier arguement, which is what lead me to read more on the subject. 3y

marleed @RamsFan1963 I hadn‘t read him because I was a bit overwhelmed with where to start but now since I bailed on my first book I may never find myself venturing back in. I guess I should have started with 3y
DogMomIrene I read several Crichton books back in high school and early college. One of my favorite genres is science-fiction, but then I realized that Crichton doesn‘t actually seem to like science. I haven‘t picked up his stuff in a while. 3y
RamsFan1963 @marked Jurassic Park is a good thriller, I also recommend Prey and Next. I still think his earlier books like The Andromeda Strain, The Eaters of The Dead and The Terminal Man are his best books. The Great Train Robbery is also a fun book. 3y
marleed @RamsFan1963 oh thanks for these recommendations - it‘s nice to see I just picked the wrong book! 3y
marleed @DogMomIrene I wish I‘d done a bit of research a gone with another choice for my first read. 3y
DogMomIrene @marleed Yeah, he‘s got a lot to choose from. I think I read The Andromeda Strain first, and loved it. 3y

#ThankfulThursday @Cosmos_Moon Thanks @Julsmarshall for the tag!

1) After 8 years across the country, I just moved back to my home county (but the opposite end) where I grew up.

2) The health, happiness and safety of my family, and a week without bad news!

I'm late to the game, so consider yourself tagged if you want to play!

This is Ben, my mum's dog, so today an honorary #dogoflitsy . He loves books. Books he has eaten include State of Fear and Chocolat. But that was when he was a puppy. He's a good boy now.

Cinfhen 💕🐶🐾 8y
GypsyKat He's beautiful! And thank goodness he grew out of his book eating days! 💗😆 8y
DebinHawaii He looks like a sweet boy (despite the book eating) 🐶❤️ 8y

Joanne1 Now there's a habit I couldn't live with. It's a good thing he grew out of that one. 8y
drokka Wow! I wonder if that gives me dog cred. Like when meeting up with buddies at the dog park and one of them dares him to go say 'hi' to the grumpy Leonberger, he takes a second too long and some terrier goad him with the ever helpful 'he's too scaaaareeeed'. He slowly turns to his terrier friend a menacingly states 'I ate Fear for breakfast' and walks toward his target. 8y
Oryx @drokka he's more likely to say "oooh, chocolat" (in a French accent), then prance off in the other direction 8y
keithmalek It's a good thing he didn‘t eat actual chocolate. 6y

My first Michael Crichton book and I loved it! I think he may become one of my favorite authors. I wish everyone would read this book. It shows how we have to be so careful believing everything the media and the government tells us to believe.
Of course the best part was reading while cuddled up with my girls. 😻

Found a cute place called Becker's Books in Houston. So many books that it was like a maze! I found a couple from my TBR list. ☺️

Megabooks I loved State of Fear! 8y
GoldenGirl Reading Angels and Demons right nowď 8y

clconn17 I've heard good things about both of these. Just have to decide which to read first! 8y
ddavisson82 I liked Angels and Demons better than the DaVinci Code, but it was quite graphically violent. Interesting story. 8y

Come back from a short vacation to find your holds ready at the library. Which one to start first?

MrBook Save Watchman for last. Maybe State first. 8y
Johnb21 @MrBook That was my original plan but than decided to start with the books that most likely have holds on them. I read the first chapter of State of Fear on impulse. Not sure how I am feeling it yet. There will be a review? 8y
Johnb21 The only reason I came across State of Fear was Recommended by the library as a relative book to The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons, etc. I was looking for a book that was closely thrilling, dealt with puzzles, clues and cryptography, and tied in with history. Sort of like National Treasure. 8y
Johnb21 If anyone has any suggestions I would be down! 8y
