Subtitled “an historical pastoral satirical scientifical romance, with mustelids,” it all fits together beautifully. The gruesome rabbit-poaching opening scene pales in comparison to the historic records of scientific specimen collectors introducing Chapter 4: “W Rothschild - 280,000 bird skins, 1880-1931, etc.” I better understand the mindset of colonists transporting nonnative species & also natural scientists of the 19th c. Excellent story!

The sun had set long before he reached home and the road shone white under a full moon veiled in little hen scrattins of cloud. He walked the four miles with heavy pockets between hawthorn hedges just breaking into the creamy lick of blossom.

Allbones had been to the sea once, as a child on a Sunday School outing. The day had been grey and the sea had spread flat as a turnip field ploughed by a chill wind. The vast, desolate space had frightened him terribly, though it had been supposed to be a treat, with games on the sand and a toffee to suck.

I found a pleasant place to read while I wait for my sisters to wake this morning, our first full day in Dublin. The first chapter in this book is all about poaching rabbits in 19th century Britain—not Easter bunny-ish at all.

Do I look wide awake? Up at 3 am for the first leg of trip to Ireland. Eyes are too tired for my book (tagged) but the knitting has begun. 😊 #knittersoflitsy
