This novel depicts a careful character study, presenting the readers with contradiction between dying vs coming to life, money vs poverty, aging vs youth, etc in late 1920s‘ Berlin society. Fragments of life flicker momentarily in Grand Hotel, souls collide and bring significant changes to one another. 5⭐️ The movie adaptation won the Oscar in 1933, and Apple Store has it for rental for SGD 4.98! I‘m going to watch it now!

Billypar I remember loving the film, but it's been so long since I've seen it. I always thought it was interesting how Garbo made such a simple line- 'I want to be alone!' so famous. 6y

What goes on in the Grand Hotel - the good and the bad -mirrors the world outside. We get a snapshot of a few of the occupants in 1920s Berlin as they come and go through the hotel doors. It is both funny and bitter sweet. I enjoyed spending a couple days of my vacation with this lovely book.

I blurbed about it recently, gushing over the cover. When I saw it at the bookstore the other day I'd already overshot my book budget so was going to leave it but my Japanese boyfriend who's been visiting Canada with me insisted on buying it for me. Aww..... ♥️♥️

I have always wanted to read it but since I have a bookstore I have to read primarily front list books. 60 at 60 is my permission to read what I want and I am thrilled to read this! I love New York Review Books beyond all reason. The books they reissue! The fabulous covers! I'm a huge fan! Recently finished Grand Hotel by Vicki Baum-a massive international bestseller in the early 1920s that went on to become a beloved movie starring Greta Garbo. What's not to love?

Wonderful novel of linked character stories rescued from obscurity. Baum has created fully human portraits of the hotel guests that will show you the highs and lows of life in late Weimar Berlin. So good I wonder why this author isn't better known.
