A Note of Explanation
A Note of Explanation | Vita Sackville-West
5 posts | 4 read | 17 to read
A Note of Explanation is a previously unknown work by iconic writer Vita Sackville-West. Written in 1922, it was recently rediscovered as a miniature book in Queen Mary's dollhouse in Windsor Castle. Witty and stylish, the story recounts the antics of a time-traveling sprite who inhabits the dollhouse. This illustrated ebook edition presents the story for the first time since 1924. Lovers of literature and history will rejoice in this irresistible one-of-a-kind ebook.

I got a copy of this because the idea of an unknown Vita Sackville-West story rediscovered in a miniature book in Queen Mary‘s dollhouse was just too good to pass up. But not only is the story itself charming, Kate Baylay‘s art deco illustrations are sure to make this one of my favorite illustrated treasures. #20in4 @Andrew65

I‘ve never read any Sackville-West. I really only know her because of her connection to Virginia Wolfe. Turns out she wrote (among many many other things) this alternative history where the Nazis win WWII. She wrote it in 1942 when the outcome was still far from certain...

TheKidUpstairs Ooh, interesting. I do like an alternate timeline tale! 4y
Ruthiella @TheKidUpstairs I find I like them in theory more than in fact. 😀 But I‘ve only read a couple so far and not this one. 4y

In 1924, 171 popular authors of the day were asked to contribute to the teeny, leather bound library of Queen Mary‘s Dollhouse in Windsor Castle. This previously unknown story by Vita Sackville-West was her contribution and is reproduced here for the first time (with beautiful Art Deco-esque illustrations). It‘s an absolute delight!

Thanks again for this lovely swap gift, @writerlibrarian !

Aimeesue I have this one - it‘s lovely! ❤️❤️❤️ 5y
LeahBergen @Aimeesue Aren‘t the illustrations pretty? She‘s illustrated for The Folio Society, too. 5y

Melissa_J That‘s cool! I assume you‘ve seen the Doll‘s House at Windsor Castle? Oh to have had one like Queen Mary‘s! I never would have stopped playing with it. 5y
LeahBergen @saresmoore It really is! 5y
LeahBergen @jillrhudy Yes! ❤️ 5y
LeahBergen @Melissa_J I have! I‘m still impressed by the idea of it having running hot and cold water and a working elevator. 😮 5y
kspenmoll Love the cover color! 5y
LeahBergen @kspenmoll It‘s such a pretty colour, isn‘t it? 5y
rubyslippersreads This looks absolutely lovely! 5y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen The illustrations are gorgeous! There's a very Art Deco feel about them. ❤️ 5y
Centique Oh that is so gorgeous. I feel lucky to have seen the dollhouse but I didn‘t know about the books - how precious! I‘ve only had three or four days of free time in England (around a work trip) but stayed in Windsor so the castle and the dollhouse was the first sightseeing I did 😍 5y

Freespirit The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is a great book! 6y
writerlibrarian The big thing getting your box ready was to choose the best edition aka prettiest cover of a vintage book you didn't have. I almost ordered Hotel Berlin. I loved that book so many years ago. It was really fun and a hardship, really, to search vintage website. 😉 I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed finding them. 6y
Kalalalatja Oh, how pretty! 😍😍 6y
LeahBergen @Freespirit I‘m so looking forward to it! 6y

#TBRtemptation post 8! For awhile we had quite a few authors with unknown works being posthumously released. Here's another. Sackville-West wrote this in 1922, and it was recently rediscovered as a miniature book in Queen Mary's dollhouse's library in Windsor Castle! This is the story of a time-traveling sprite who inhabits the dollhouse. The lavish artwork is gorgeous art deco. This is a collector's item. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
