The Beast's Heart
The Beast's Heart: The breathtakingly magical, brand new take on a tale as old as time | Leife Shallcross
20 posts | 16 read | 50 to read
A sumptuous, bewitching new take on a tale as old as time - read the Beast's side of the story at long last. 'Utterly Enchanting!' - Kate Forsyth, author of Bitter Greens and The Wild Girl 'What a delight! This is a beautifully crafted, deeply romantic reworking of the fairy tale' - Juliet Marillier, author of the Blackthorn & Grim series ********* I am neither monster nor man - yet I am both. I am the Beast. I know why I was cursed; I know the legacy of evil I carry in my tainted blood. So how could she ever love me? My Isabeau. She opened my eyes, my mind and my heart when I was struggling just to be human. And now I might lose her forever. Lose yourself in this gorgeously rich and magical retelling of The Beauty and the Beast that finally lays bare the Beast's heart.

I really loved hearing Beauty and the Beast from the Beast‘s point of view. Very much enjoying the #fairytalereadingchallenge!

IndoorDame This cover really reminds me of The Dollmaker of Krakow 3y

Thank you!!

Good. Interesting characters and concept. It is a retelling of Beauty and The Beast through the eyes of The Beast. Shows a compassionate side to The Beast. Also embellishes the family of Belle which is nice to see. Full of romance and magic. Thank you #Netgalley for the free copy.

"Enchantments and dreams: I suspect they are made of the same stuff. They each beguile the mind and confuse the senses with wonder and strangeness so all that was familiar becomes freakish, and the most bizarre of things intimate and natural. For the longest time after the curse fell, I did not know if I was a beast who dreamed of being a man, or a man who dreamed he was a beast."

So me and my husband went book shopping and he spoilt me with sooooo many new books. This being the first I'll read of those. So lucky to have a great husband with the same love of reading as me. Thanks @Jackal121

I thought this was a very good retelling of Beauty and the Beast from the perspective if the Beast. He is scared of becoming his abusive father so his heart hardens and freezes. A fairy curses him into a beast. The cure? True love. I really thought it was the little details that brought this book to life - his pride when he learns to wash his face or hold a book without destroying it... It was a good #NetGalley pick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“The Beast's Heart" is a darker, yet deeply romantic, retelling of "Beauty and the Beast". Based more on the classic story instead of the Disney retellings, this novel was refreshing since it was from the Beast's perspective. Shallcross did an excellent job telling this story, and is full of anguish, heartbreak, hope, forgiveness, and romance.

Next up! Im working on clearing my #NetGalley shelves by the end of the month. That way by time we move I can start going through hard copies again, and dont have to risk the dreaded "is that book here or the new house or in the car or in a box or what....?"

♥️♥️♥️♥️ I loved this!! It‘s like McKinley‘s Beauty, but from the Beasts perspective. And if you audiobook it, read by Jim Dale. Just heart warming and delightful. If you are a Beauty and the Beast junkie like me, read it.

Beauty and the Beast retold from Beast‘s POV. This is not really based on the Disney movie that most of us are used to, but rather the original fairytale-I loved that. Beast‘s POV allows for a ton of vulnerability and insight into his character that we haven‘t had before; I love that his insecurity over Isabeau‘s initial rejections made Beast take risks. His character before Isabeau comes to the mansion is interesting and I LOVE the magic system.

The magical tale of Beauty and the Beast, reimagined from the Beast's point of view.⁣

I love Beauty and the Beast, it is probably my favourite Disney book/movie. I have not read any fairytale retellings before so I can‘t compare this to others however I really enjoyed it. Admittedly it was a little slow at times but overall it was a likeable, slightly sad story of magic, love and loneliness. ⁣

What are your favourite retellings? ♥️

The idea of this retelling is, on the surface, wonderful. You hope to understand his history, motivations, emotions and growth. Whilst this is covered to some extent, the relationship between the Beast and his captive lady is stilted and awkward, like teenagers on a first date... It touches on quite dark themes such as suicide and abuse, but there is a lack of a maturity. I was not expecting singing tableware, but I was expecting a lot more depth.

THE BEAST'S HEART by Leife Shallcross is a retelling of a classic fairytale. It manages to walk the line between honouring many of the traditional elements of the story and bringing some fresh twists.
