The Never-Ending Present
The Never-Ending Present: The Story of Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip | Michael Barclay
11 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
The biography of Canadas band In the summer of 2016, more than a third of Canadians tuned in to watch what was likely the Tragically Hips final performance, broadcast from their hometown of Kingston, Ontario. Why? Because these five men were always more than just a band. They sold millions of records and defined a generation of Canadian rock music. But they were also a tabula rasa onto which fans could project their own ideas: of performance, of poetry, of history, of Canada itself. In the first print biography of the Tragically Hip, Michael Barclay talks to dozens of the bands peers and friends about not just the Hips music but about the opening bands, the American albatross, the bands role in Canadian culture, and Gord Downies role in reconciliation with Indigenous people. When Downie announced he had terminal cancer and decided to take the Hip on the road one more time, the tour became another Terry Fox moment; this time, Canadians got to witness an embattled hero reach the finish line. This is a book not just for fans of the band: its for anyone interested in how culture can spark national conversations.

Definitely recommended📚

A wonderful story/history with oh so many feels❤️‍🔥 I took my time & listened to many of their songs, on Spotify, throughout this read.🤓

I think I would have enjoyed this more as an audiobook, only because I found it to be a bit dense & therefore a slog at times.

I'm posting one book per day from the ever growing unread stacks in my personal library. No description or explanation, just books I own and plan to read. #tbr

Day 75 (Audible edition) - yesterday's post, a bit late

mandarchy I am learning so much on litsy! I did not know that Strombo narrated audio books. So cool. 3y
CuriousG @mandarchy This is the only one I know of that Strombo has narrated, but hoping their are more out there as I love his voice! 3y

Signed book and beer haul from last night's event. It was a lot of fun, but way too short. Tears were shed, beer was drunk, my husband repeatedly called the author Sean, good times!

Craftylikefox Sounds like so much fun! 6y
Robothugs Love the bit about your husband 😆 6y
AlaMich Sean?? 😂 6y
TheKidUpstairs @Robothugs @AlaMich I was trying so hard not to laugh! How do you correct someone when you're right in front of the author?! Luckily, my husband has a good sense of humour and laughed at himself after. 6y

Pickpick

A great book about the Hip that has been put together with great care (I love the author's note stating that the chapters can be read in any order) and consideration for its subjects. Now I am working my way through their catalogue to check out new gems and rediscover forgotten faves.

Anton This is a must read for me! The Hip are my favourite band of all time. 7y
rabbitprincess @Anton Hope you enjoy it! 7y

OF COURSE Gord Downie introduced himself as Maurice Duplessis 😂😂

RaimeyGallant I miss him. 7y
RaimeyGallant At Folk Fest in Winnipeg in 2010, he was the only artist to acknowledge that there were a thousand protesters illegally detained in Toronto, and it made me cry, because it felt like no one believed me when I told them what I saw there, how the police shot at me. 7y
rabbitprincess @RaimeyGallant I'm so sorry that you had to experience that 😪 Gord was wonderful for deriving the most good out of his public profile to bring attention to issues that many overlook. 7y
RaimeyGallant Truth. :) 7y
