Zofloya, Or, The Moor
Zofloya, Or, The Moor | Charlotte Dacre, Kim Ian Michasiw
16 posts | 17 read | 11 to read
`Few venture as thou hast in the alarming paths of sin.' This is the final judgement of Satan on Victoria di Loredani, the heroine of Zofloya, or The Moor (1806), a tale of lust, betrayal, and multiple murder set in Venice in the last days of the fifteenth century. The novel follows Victoria's progress from spoilt daughter of indulgent aristocrats, through a period of abuse and captivity, to a career of deepening criminality conducted under Satan's watchful eye. Charlotte Dacre's narrative deftly displays her heroine's movement from the vitalized position of Ann Radcliffe's heroines to a fully conscious commitment to vice that goes beyond that of `Monk' Lewis's deluded Ambrosio. The novel's most daring aspect is its anatomy of Victoria's intense sexual attraction to her Moorish servant Zofloya that transgresses taboos both of class and race. A minor scandal on its first publication, and a significant influence on Byron and Shelley, Zofloya has been unduly neglected.Contradicting idealized stereotypes of women's writing, the novel's portrait of indulged desire, gratuitous cruelty, and monumental self-absorption retains considerable power to disturb. The introduction to this edition, the first for nearly 200 years, examines why Zofloya deserves to be read alongside established Gothic classics as the highly original work of an intriguing and unconventional writer.

I started out liking this but as it progressed it got a little to melodramatic. I can definitely see why this novel caused waves when published- it‘s very scandalous and sexual for its time. However, I‘ve come to realize that I am not a fan of gothic novels as a whole and it seems that not even the drama of murder and lust can change that for me.

⭐️⭐️💫

Overwrought morality tale, but it started with a Z. 😂 Actually it was interesting from a humanities standpoint. For #litsyAtoZ, I'm 20/26. I still need J (in progress), N, O, Q, V, and X. #serialreader

readinginthedark 😆 Sounds strange, but I need a Z, too! 6y

Pickpick

It took me many years to come back and finish this novel, but it is Gothic in the extreme, and such a good, good read. Love it!

I've found a place for us all to hang out! 😂😂😂

Went to Osterley (a National Trust estate) en route to hospital and had to use Google Maps to get us out. When I saw the name of the nature reserve, I knew I had to screenshot & share on here!

Tagged book is one of 3 physical books that I've brought with me in preparation for tomorrow's appointment!

AmyG Ha! 6y
Slajaunie Yay! We can all meet up there. 6y
TrishB Very cool 👍🏻😁 6y
BookishMe Wow! Hope all goes well at the appointment 6y

Done. Gotta move on. It was getting a tad better by this point. But it‘s soooooo melodramatic. I‘m afraid it will put me into a slump.
I was going to use it for #LitsyAtoZ.
But I found a Joyce Carol Oates possibility- Zombie - and after reading Black Water, I‘m happy for any excuse to read more of her.

{sigh} This is why I don‘t nap.
I fell asleep earlier tonight while reading. I was awoken after an hour or so. Which is good - I needed to take out my contacts at the very least.
But now I can‘t fall back asleep 😴
Starting this one... we‘ll see how far I get. I‘m secretly hoping it‘s boring 🤣

Joanne1 I'm with you, I don't generally nap either for the same reason. 6y

Another one read for a challenge. Or I would have bailed.

Sue I remember reading this one for a lit class many years ago! (I really enjoyed it then, I wonder what I would think of it now....) 6y

I've decided to (probably) join in on the #litsyclassics challenge next year! All of these selections I either own or can access for free (most via #serialreader), so it's perfect for not spending money. There are six rereads, but only of books I haven't read since middle school.

I love planning reading lists and then reading whatever I want, so we'll see what happens! I hope at least to get through some of my owned TBR. 😊

Sarah83 Great choices 😎 6y
Laura317 Ok, somehow i missed this challenge. Is it to late to join? 6y
Caterina @Laura317 Not at all! It starts in 2018, and sign ups will be going on until the new year, I think! @Sarah83 can provide more details. 😊 6y
Sace I'm the same way. I love to make lists. Actually sticking to them is another thing entirely 😁 6y
batsy Your Z book looks intriguing! Must look it up ☺️ 6y
