Conspiracy of Tall Men
Conspiracy of Tall Men | Noah Hawley
11 posts | 9 read | 11 to read
The debut literary thriller that launched the career of the bestselling author of BEFORE THE FALL and the creator of the show Fargo. Linus Owen is a young professor of conspiracy theory at a small college just outside San Francisco. His marriage is foundering and his wife, Claudia, has gone to Chicago to visit her mother. But if Claudia is in Chicago, how is it that two FBI agents show up at Linus' office and inform him that Claudia has been killed in a plane crash on her way from New York to Brazil? And why did a man named Jeffrey Holden, the vice president of a major pharmaceutical company, buy her ticket and die beside her? Enlisting the aid of two fellow conspiracy theorists, Linus heads across the country in search of answers. But as their journey progresses, it becomes frighteningly clear they've left the realm of the academic and are tangled up in a dangerous, multilayered cover-up. Finally, deep in the heart of the American desert, stunned by an ominous revelation, Linus sees he has a new mission: to try to stay alive. Part Don DeLillo, part Kurt Vonnegut, with writing that is electric, whip-smart and suspenseful at each turn, Noah Hawley draws us into a deliciously labyrinthine world of paranoia and plots. "Energetic and funny...an engrossing debut."--The New York Times

I loved Hawley‘s Before the Fall, so I thought I‘d go back and read his debut, but frankly, it‘s a mess. I‘m about 1/3 through and can‘t take anymore. The premise is intriguing, but it‘s bloated with unnecessary exposition and scenes that don‘t contribute to the story. Good to know that he learned and grew, so I‘ll stick with his later books.

My first #LMPBC and I‘ve enjoyed all the books read. This literary thriller was suspenseful yet very dense in places. Linus Owen is a professor of conspiracy theories and married to Claudia. One day at work, Linus is informed that his wife has been killed on the way to Brazil. With the help of two friends, Linus embarks on a search across the country asking questions he needs answering. An Interesting read.

Pickpick

#lmpbc choice, so won't say too much.

@Cupcake12 @charl08 because of Christmas/postal strikes, do we want to start it in January so that we avoid some of the hassle?

@Cupcake12 @charl08 I'm currently reading this for #lmpbc but it's an ex-library book and I've just discovered some pages missing. Should I chose a different book or are you happy to continue with the tagged?

Cupcake12 Can the still follow the story ok? 1y
jenniferw88 @Cupcake12 we're missing 9 pages, but it doesn't look as if we've missed out on much. It doesn't logically follow on, but the next chapter sticks with similar themes/same characters (minus the one who has already died and whose death is being investigated). @charl08 1y
Cupcake12 I‘m happy to read it x when do we have to send the book out? Who do I send my book out too? 1y

jenniferw88 @Cupcake12 at the end of the month, usually, but as we're only 3 you could wait until after Xmas because of the strikes and posting over the holidays. You are sending each book to me, and I send on to @charl08 , who will then send back to you. 1y
Cupcake12 Brilliant, thank you xx 1y
charl08 I don't mind re the missing pages. Can I check where I can find the info re mailing etc? Thinking I have missed an email, but don't know who it would come from to check... 1y
jenniferw88 @charl08 it should come from Suellen Williams, but I was going to include it in a note to you anyway, as we always send on to the same person. 1y
charl08 Thank you! Found it. 1y

#booksandchill as Publisher's Weekly describe it as a chiller in their review.
