Night of Miracles
Night of Miracles: A Novel | Elizabeth Berg
19 posts | 28 read | 32 to read
A delightful novel about surprising friendships, community, and the way small acts of kindness can change a life, from the bestselling author of The Story of Arthur Truluv Lucille Howard is getting on in years, but she stays busy. Thanks to the inspiration of her dearly departed friend Arthur Truluv, she has begun to teach baking classes, sharing the secrets to her delicious classic Southern yellow cake, the perfect pinwheel cookies, and other sweet essentials. Her classes have become so popular that shes hired Iris, a new resident of Mason, Missouri, as an assistant. Iris doesnt know how to bake but she needs to keep her mind off a big decision she sorely regrets. When a new family moves in next door and tragedy strikes, Lucille begins to look out for Lincoln, their son. Lincolns parents arent the only ones in town facing hard choices and uncertain futures. In these difficult times, the residents of Mason come together and find the true power of communityjust when they need it the most. Elizabeth Bergs characters jump right off the page and into your heart said Fannie Flagg about The Story of Arthur Truluv. The same could be said about Night of Miracles, a heartwarming novel that reminds us that the people we come to love are often the ones we dont expect.

A small town community is brought together in part by an elderly woman‘s baking classes. I laughed. I cried. Elizabeth Berg is quickly becoming a favorite. #litsylovereads 🍪

Very charming! I liked this one slightly less than the previous book (tagged👇🏻) but that‘s only because Arthur Truluv isn‘t really in it. I loved visiting Maddy and Lucille again and meeting all of their friends around town. I loved the side stories. There are a few parts that really tugged at my emotions and a whole lot that made me smile. One of my favorite parts is the descriptions of Lucille‘s baking and other foods from the story.

Elizabeth Bergs books are like warm security blankets.
Night of Miracles follows on from The Story of Arthur Truluv with the characters of Lucille and Maddy adding others along the way. It highlights friendships and how we react to events in our lives, where we land, what we do with them.
One fault with this book is that Berg does not include the recipes of Lucille‘s wonderful baking. The descriptions of which will have you salivating.

Sweet. And so much better than I expected. The author usually messes with me.

I really wasn‘t expecting much from this book, so I was pleasantly surprised. I think this was actually better than the first book in this series The Story Of Arthur Truluv. I was absolutely charmed by these characters and their stories. Lucille was my favorite as she is so driven and always says what she thinks. Berg‘s writing is beautiful and she has a knack for perfectly capturing the emotions we all feel but cannot always put into words.

Nute Nice review! 5y
Prairiegirl_reading I bought this one figuring I was going to love Arthur Truluv because I usually enjoy Elizabeth Berg but I didn‘t. I‘m glad you enjoyed it and think it‘s better than the first! 5y

Really fun story about people in a small town largely held together by a woman who runs baking classes. Very light read, in fact I read it all in one afternoon. Delightful.

JanuarieTimewalker13 I just finished Arthur Truluv. Is Maddie and Nola in this one too? I‘m so excited bc I didn‘t know there was a companion novel! 6y

I just loved this book, even more than The Story of Arthur Truluv. The people of this community and their intertwining stories were perfect. So nice.

"Life is funny, isn‘t it? Funny in the way you can never predict not only what will happen, but who you‘ll become. Here she is, at the end of her life, & look. ... Who would have thought she‘d become such a softie? Some creaky old gate opened when she met Frank,... She has developed not just warmth, love. ... One love departed, & all this followed. Seasons of the heart, she supposes. Never think winter will last when spring is equally inevitable."

Finished this ARC right before it expires tomorrow - whew. I really enjoyed this follow up to The Story of Arthur Truluv. It does stand on its own and knowing some of the characters makes this story even better. I love the story of communities of people that really care for each other. I hope there are many communities like this in the world.

It has been a wild morning here today. I am trying to get a little reading in before CVSing today. I am reading Night of Miracles by Elizabeth Berg. It is so good! #alwaysreading #socksunday #coffeeisamust

LauraBeth I want to re-design the CVS pharmacy I go to so that none of the pharmacists will ever have to step on a step-stool to retrieve a medication. Ever. Like, why can‘t they devote more floor space to the pharmacy? 6y
Reecaspieces @LauraBeth Cvs has so many stupid rules it is not even funny. And for the record my boss said on a conference call this week that we could never sit down. We must have a doctors note! I already don‘t get a break or a lunch so I guess I will on sit for 30sec to pee. They are nazis! I so want to retire and read 6y
LauraBeth That is terrible @Reecaspieces! I want you to just retire and read also! I need to take my CVS pharmacists some treats - y‘all need a lunch. And to sit down! 6y

Reecaspieces @LauraBeth totally agree! And yes go buy them something. We had a customer bring us a little Caesar‘s pizza the other day and let me tell you it saved our life! 6y
SaturnDoo @LauraBeth more floor space dedicated to RX means less front store floor space for ridiculous merchandise that front store employees like myself have to deal with. 😂😂😂 6y
SaturnDoo @Reecaspieces I agree!!! I am CVSing for 8 hrs this afternoon too. I work FS but have my pharmacy tech license so can be used as back up. I feel so bad for y'all not getting breaks etc. Sometime, as a shift lead, we don't get them either. 6y
Reecaspieces @SaturnDoo Cvs is a hard company to work for! 6y
AlaMich @Reecaspieces how can they not give you a break? How long of a shift do you work? 6y

This was a fun, quick read. Nothing earth shattering, just a book filled with heartwarming characters in a small community in Missouri. While they all have their issues/trials to overcome, they realize that they are not alone nor are they unimportant in helping others with their troubles in life. Humorous and at times reminded me a little of A Man Called Ove...but with a lovable Lucille at the helm. 4/5⭐️

robinb **NOTE: I‘ve just discovered that there is a prior book to this one which includes some of these same characters (tagged here). I would definitely like to go back and read that one even though this one stood on its own quite well. (edited) 6y
