After the Party

'Had it not been for my weakness, someone who is now dead could still be alive. That is what I believed and consequently lived with every day in prison.' It is the summer of 1938 and Phyllis Forrester has returned to England after years abroad. Moving into her sister's grand country house, she soon finds herself entangled in a new world of idealistic beliefs and seemingly innocent friendships. Fevered talk of another war infiltrates their small, privileged circle, giving way to a thrilling solution: a great and charismatic leader, who will restore England to its former glory. At a party hosted by her new friends, Phyllis lets down her guard for a single moment, with devastating consequences. Years later, Phyllis, alone and embittered, recounts the dramatic events which led to her imprisonment and changed the course of her life forever. Powerful, poignant, and exquisitely observed, After the Party is an illuminating portrait of a dark period of British history which we are yet to fully acknowledge.

After the Party
The Reckoning

(I don't have the Toad figurine so I'm interpreting this picture as the characters discussing what to do with Toad after another of his parties/car crashes! 😂)

Eggs This is so good 😊 4y

This book looks at events after two types of party: one, a social gathering of acquaintances quaffing drinks, the other, the main characters experiences when she is imprisoned for her association with Oswald Mosley‘s fascist movement.

A good read, but not quite as hard hitting as I wanted it to be. And a great cover.

Cinfhen A+ cover 🥰 5y
Sace I want to read it for the cover alone. 5y
LeahBergen I second (third?) what @Cinfhen and @Sace said! 👍🏻 5y

So, I wasn't really sure what to make of this book. It was interesting reading a book from the perspective of the Fascist party as I've never read a WWII book from that perspective before. However, I did find it a bit slow at times and disliked most of the characters. Overall, it was an okay read.

I would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy free of charge. This is my honest and unbiased opinion of it.

Finally starting this #netgalley #ARC because it publishes in 4 days. I'm hoping to get it finished before then, but I know that's a pipe dream. ♡ I'm still going to read and enjoy it (hopefully).

Pickpick

My physical book grp picked this read abt 3 sisters who become in different ways absorbed in the GB fascist movement of oswald moseley. Whilst at times i found the voices annoying + plot a little thin i enjoyed the picture of a unique slice of British history and the impact of a charismatic leader on apparently intelligent individuals beliefs. Much to absorb from anti semitism in pre war society to the effect of interment w/o trial. Interesting.

Cathythoughts I have this one on the shelf... must give it a go soon 👍🏻 5y

So hard to like the characters, I only liked one! I didn‘t like how the main character sort of stumbled into prison and took no responsibility for it... some interesting historical aspects but didn‘t learn as much as I would have liked since Connelly didn‘t get into much about fascism or Oswald (intentionally but I know nothing about this...)

CarolynM If you're interested in this period and in Mosley but don't want to get too heavy, I recommend the tagged book. One of the daughters was Mosley's first wife and another was his mistress (edited) 5y

If you like reading about English rich peoples problems before WWII then you‘ll enjoy this.
The big reveal isn‘t that shocking (I think I‘m judging by modern day thinking though) - the book is really interesting though and if google worked at any speed I‘d be on there now. Going to look up some things when I get home.
A section of history we often try to hide in this country, Mosley and the rise of fascism.

CarolynM I'm fascinated by that period and I find the whole Mosely business really interesting. I've looked at this book in the shop but wasn't sure. Maybe I should look at it again since you liked it. 6y
batsy Sounds so intriguing! Like a fictional take on the Mitfords. 6y
TrishB @CarolynM I enjoyed it 👍🏻 interested enough to have a look at some NF. 6y
