Tie That Binds | Kent Haruf
27 posts | 24 read | 34 to read
From the bestselling author of Eventide, The Tie That Binds is a powerfully eloquent tribute to the arduous demands of rural America, and of the tenacity of the human spirit. Colorado, January 1977. Eighty-year-old Edith Goodnough lies in a hospital bed, IV taped to the back of her hand, police officer at her door. She is charged with murder. The clues: a sack of chicken feed slit with a knife, a milky-eyed dog tied outdoors one cold afternoon. The motives: the brutal business of farming and a family code of ethics as unforgiving as the winter prairie itself. Here, Kent Haruf delivers the sweeping tale of a woman of the American High Plains, as told by her neighbor, Sanders Roscoe. As Roscoe shares what he knows, Edith's tragedies unfold: a childhood of pre-dawn chores, a mother's death, a violence that leaves a father dependent on his children, forever enraged. Here is the story of a woman who sacrifices her happiness in the name of family--and then, in one gesture, reclaims her freedom.

I enjoyed this story. It is written in a slower but well developed sort of way. The characters are interesting and personal. This is Kent Haruf‘s first book. I‘ve read three others—in the Plainsong series. I‘m not sure how many more of his books are left for me to read, but I‘m expecting that I will read them.

I got quite bored in the middle, or maybe inpatient is a better word, like come on already. But now that I'm done I'm glad I read it.

This was Haruf‘s debut novel written in 1984 and it‘s certainly stood the test of time. His writing was so subtle but skilled to perfection. I‘m so sad we will never receive anymore stories about the people of Colt, Colorado. Here we meet Edith Goodnought, born in the late 1800‘s to a demanding father and unsatisfied mother, all trying to survive the harsh climate and conditions of farm life. Completely heart wrenching with real moments of joy.

I enjoyed this slow burner, but not as much as the only other Haruf I‘ve read, which happened to have been his last ever novel, Our Souls At Night.

Some memorable farm and country scenes 😬 and frustrating character inertion 😩. Still, beautifully written and page-turning. I will continue to seek out the rest of his work.

I‘ve had Haruf on my radar for a while & intended to grab myself a 2nd hand copy of any I come across. The first I found was Our Souls At Night, which I read & loved a couple of years ago.
Then this one turned up in my own little street library. I rarely take books from my own library, because I mainly have it to dispense them!
I see that this was Haruf‘s first novel, & the other I read was his last. 🙏

I really liked this. It‘s not fast moving, but the beginning sure had me wondering what happened. This is very much like his other books, though. Not a page-turner, but the characters are so well-done that you care about them and want to know what happens

Ahhh, such superb narrative. Such an intricate view of small town American lives.
Whilst this was a slow start, I became enthralled by midway through. Became truly caring about the characters.
Love his writing so much 😍😍

KVanRead Ooh thought I‘d read all of his but missed this one! Excited to know about it - I love his writing 😍 4y

This sprawls a bit, but I don‘t care when it‘s Haruf. ☺️ His character portraits are always so compelling.

Haruf's writing is so clean, concise and simple. Narrated by Sandy, this story dives into life of his long time neighbor, Edith and the ways in which she and others were bound to their situation, their family. Beautifully written. #firstedition #collectable

If you see an emergency flare burst in the New Hampshire sky, it's because I'm sick in a hotel room with only one book.

Highlight was seeing commercial for Dr Quinn's heart jewelry line that looks a LOT like boobs and butts. Like I can't believe no one noticed. 8y
Suet624 That's hysterical. I've never liked that jewelry and now I know one of the reasons. I could list off several other reasons but maybe that's not important right now. 8y
