Booklist (starred review) "A powerful, in-your-face novel." Horn Book (starred review) Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalils name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. But what Starr doesor does notsay could upend her community. It could also endanger her life. And don't miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas's powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give.

If you like books about modern issues, you‘ll love this book. So far in the novel, I‘ve come to learn that Starr experiences lots of racism and discrimination in her own school and social life. She‘s now become away that she is dating a white male and starts to question it as she is African American. This book is written in first person perspective and allows the readers to feel the emotions that are written on the pages by using words such as ‘I‘

MissYaremcio Nicely done Sam! Love this book! 6/6 3y

I cried my way through much of this. Angie Thomas does an excellent job of juxtaposing violence and injustice with love and supportive family and community. Her characters are nuanced, and her teens are realistically conflicted. Especially striking is her portrayal of the need to keep living daily life while huge events tear things up. Now I can watch the movie.

kspenmoll Such a wonderful book! 3y
lynneamch The audio was excellent, as well. 3y

Uhm my #cupidgoespostal box was AMAZING and I can‘t wait until lunchtime to give @nelehelen a proper thank you. In the meantime, the scarf went perfect with my planned outfit and I could not wait to start The Hate U Give. So I took them both to school so here‘s a cheesy af picture.

This is one of those books that I really think everyone would benefit from reading. It's written from the perspective of Starr, a 16 year old who witnesses her best friend get murdered by a cop for driving while black. The worst part is that this happens all too often in the real world.

Reecaspieces It is a fantastic read! 6y

I'm only 50 pages in, and this book is already so heavy. 😔 It pains me to know that this story isn't even stretching the truth.

BookInMyHands This book on audio was phenomenal! 6y
MrsGagnonreads2024 My 14 year old niece is reading my copy and told me it‘s sad that it‘s very true that it‘s not far off from real life 6y

Who else is participating in #nanowrimo ? This is my first time and I‘m excited to see what I get accomplished! (So far I‘ve written 3,419 words! Woohoo!) With that said, I have no idea how much reading I‘ll get done, so these are a few books I‘d like to get read in the near future, and we‘ll see if they get read this month or not 😄 #tbr

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Beautiful photo 🧡🧡 6y
thewallflower0707 I want to do #nanowrimo too, I have a plot and character development down, but I‘m struggling to decide if I should write it in diary form or third person 🙁 6y
Merethebookgal @thewallflower0707 I‘d suggest taking a scene and writing it both ways, maybe that‘ll help you decide! 6y
