The story follows two women, Mariam and Laila, who grow up in Afghanistan between the 1960ies and the early 2000s. Despite many tragic events, dashed hopes and male violence they both find some kind of meaningful existence. The books leaves a deep sense of sadness, for women‘s lives in that society and for Afghanistan itself.

I loved this book so much that I hated putting it down to cook dinner. The writing is magnificent and the characters are loveable (mostly)!

Although not as good as The Kite Runner, it's still a great read

Covering a tumultuous time in Afghanistan, the lives of two women become intertwined in Kabul.
It was a tough read, especially with everything happening with women‘s rights around the world as well as in Afghanistan currently.
I feel like ultimately the story ended on a hopeful note though.

I have just reached part 3 so I am nearly halfway through.
It‘s a tough read and I have a feeling it‘s going to get worse, but at the same time I am enjoying the story ☺️

A friend and I started this group only knowing a couple of members, but we posted in local fb groups, and ladies showed up to the first meeting not knowing anyone. That takes courage! We‘ve now had 3 meetings, and I‘m digging our core group of 10-12. Bookish people are the BEST. 💚

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I never picked this up during its first few years of incredible success, then the window of my caring shut tight. Now, here we are many years later, and it‘s my new IRL book club‘s selection. I acquiesced. Hosseini focuses on the lives of Mariam and Laila, two women, two generations, ravaged by unrest and oppression in their native Afghanistan. It‘s a beautifully written, brutal story. I‘m happy to have finally read it. #bookclub

An interesting - and somewhat difficult - read in 2021 with all that's happening again in Afghanistan. There was such depth and richness in this with a beautiful story of two women who come together in an unexpected way.

A wonderful book.

A difficult choice for February, but chose this one as story stayed in my head most. Also notable mentions for Three Marys by Glenn Cooper, Deadly Cry by Angela Marsons and The Night Hawks by Ellie Griffiths. A good reading month.

It‘s a heartbreaking story of friendship, war and life in Afghanistan. Mariam and Laila are brought together by circumstances and soon become very close. Taliban has taken over Kabul and they need to survive its regime.

It‘s a really captivating story seeing Afghanistan through Mariam‘s & Laila‘s eyes.

Such similar covers and coincidence of having two picks for upcoming bookclub selections! I have just finished the ‘The Space Between Us‘ and looking forward to reading ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns‘.

I am constantly astounded by this book every time I get a chance to listen to it. We were on the topic of horror tonight in my book club and I was brought back to this book constantly within our discussion. This novel is not by any means the definition of a horror story. But I feel that sense of shock and unbelief as Mariam‘s story goes on. It‘s truly heart wrenching and raw. Glad to be reading it even if it‘s difficult.

Now, I've had this in my pile for a few years. However, I absolutely *hated* The Kite Runner [what?! Shocking, I know.] So I've been putting this off due to my abhorrence of TKR.
Sooooo here's hoping this one isn't as bad lol
I've heard good things, but... everyone generally raves about TKR, too ... and since I'm the minority who hated it, I'm not sure about this one.

“But mostly, Mariam is in Laila‘s own heart, where she shines with the bursting radiance of a thousand suns.”

And I will read this book, again and again until our only sun goes out or I cease to breathe.

This book has been on my Goodreads TBR for over 10 years. I've been avoiding it because Khaled Hosseini broke my heart in The Kite Runner. But it's time to tackle it.

This also fits for #BookSpinBingo pick.

This one will surely make you cry.
The story is set in Afghanistan which revolves around two woman Mariam and Laila.
The pain and sacrifices they go through due to the male dominant society is what pictured here basically which makes it a tough read at times.
It's thrilling how an author has a series of climaxes which makes it one of the best reads.

This book ripped out my heart and stomped on it. I think he did an amazing job telling the tale of all the fighting in Afghanistan, and then the Taliban regime, and how it affected people's lives. And of course always the suffering of women. I wish he would write a book about life there today, 14 years after this book was written. Highly recommended. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I found this one hard to get into...I loved THE KITE RUNNER 💯% better

This story takes you on an emotional roller coaster that pulls at your heart strings. I appreciate Khaled‘s ability to portray the hardships of everyday life for Muslim women in a culture that is dominated by males. He so eloquently tells the story of two brave women who once were adversaries, overcome loss, pain, and betrayal, and demonstrate their loyalty and love for one another in the ultimate act of selflessness.

Don‘t judge what you can‘t understand. You must know and you should think that hope can sprout also in the desert?

A friend recommended this to me after I wouldn‘t stop raving about Malala‘s story. This heartwarming tale of two generations of women who form the most unlikely friendship is written with such a poetic flair that evokes so many emotions in you. Women go through so much in life & Khaled in this story reveals many of these trials. This quote touched me: “Like a compass needle that points north, a man‘s accusing finger always finds a woman. Always.”

She would never leave her mark on Mammy's heart the way her brothers had, because Mammy's heart was like a pallid beach where Laila's footprints would forever wash away beneath the waves of sorrow that swelled and crashed, swelled and crashed.

Audio. It took a while to get into it. I wasn‘t sure if it was the story this 2nd time around or if it was the audio. I rated it higher the first time around. Which is still really good, so it did pick up. At the end, though, they revisited some characters from early in the book and because I missed some at the beginning when the story seemed “slower” I wasn‘t even sure who some of those people were. The bulk of the story is very good, though

On the one hand, this has a lot going for it in how it exposes problems in Afghani society involving the treatment of women, the poor, and victims of domestic violence. But I couldn't connect with any of the characters: they seemed two-dimensional. I felt like the author kept implicitly saying "Isn't this terrible?" instead of crafting a more nuanced narrative. It did make me interested in learning about the culture and politics of Afghanistan.
