Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things
Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things | Carolyn Mackler
An overweight teen is sure that she s the weakest link in her high-powered family - until her handsome, athletic, star-student brother has a shocking fall from grace. Fifteen-year-old Virginia Shreves has a larger-than-average body and a plus-size inferiority complex. She lives on the Web, snarfs junk food, and follows the "Fat Girl Code of Conduct." Her stuttering best friend has just moved to Walla Walla (of all places). Her new companion, Froggy Welsh the Fourth (real name), has just succeeded in getting his hand up her shirt, and she lives in fear that he ll look underneath. Then there are the other Shreves: Mom, the successful psychologist and exercise fiend; Dad, a top executive who ogles thin women on TV; and older siblings Anais and rugby god Byron, both of them slim and brilliant. Delete Virginia, and the Shreves would be a picture-perfect family. Or so she s convinced. And then a shocking phone call changes everything. With irreverent humor, insight, and surprising gravity, Carolyn Mackler creates an endearingly blunt heroine whose story will speak to every teen who struggles with family expectations - and serve as a welcome reminder that the most impressive achievement is to be true to yourself."

Between Pick and So-So. Fifteen-year-old Virginia feels like a plus-sized black sheep in her family, especially next to her perfect big brother Byron. Not to mention her best friend has moved, leaving Virginia to navigate an awkward relationship with a boy alone...

I loved this first choice for #24b4Monday (for which I will be reading banned books). It's a coming of age story about a chubby girl from an over-acheiving family as she learns that the world shouldn't be about how other people view you - it's about how you view yourself. It was engaging and I loved the main character, Virginia.

ephemeralwaltz I also loved this when I read it! 5y

The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things by Carolyn Mackler is a frustrating but heartwarming story about a girl in high school that is struggling to get comfortable in her own skin while navigating the both the tricky world of high school and some very difficult family situations.

Went to the public library to use the free restroom. Bought a book. My husband said, “How did you buy just one?” 😘 I love him! Side note: Ocean Beach Public Library has a fantastic book sale section.

Christine Ooh, which Ocean Beach? San Diego? If so I must check out their book sale, haven‘t been to that branch in a while! 6y
JackieSmith @Christine yes, San Diego! It‘s even organized by genre. 👍🏻 6y
Christine Oh yay! I will be heading there soon. :) (edited) 6y
Peddler410 I read this when it first came out. I‘ve recently purchased a new copy. 6y

I‘m LOVING this book so far! I wasn‘t sure what I was expecting when I started it, but this has a more sexuality-coming-of-age story than just an adolescent girl who‘s insecure about her weight. I was almost worried about it feeling a little too “childish” for me, but honestly reading in Virginia‘s point of view gave me flashbacks to how I felt at that age; Definitely worth the hype! #currentread #mountTBR
