What should have been a fun-filled, carefree day takes a tragic turn for the worse for one mother when her best friends child goes missing in this suspenseful, compulsively readable, and darkly twisted psychological thriller. It all started at the school fair Charlotte was supposed to be looking after the children, and she swears she was. She only took her eyes off of them for one second. But when her three kids are all safe and sound at the school fair, and Alice, her best friend Harriets daughter, is nowhere to be found, Charlotte panics. Frantically searching everywhere, Charlotte knows she must find the courage to tell Harriet that her beloved only child is missing. And admit that she has only herself to blame. Harriet, devastated by this unthinkable, unbearable loss, can no longer bring herself to speak to Charlotte again, much less trust her. Now more isolated than ever and struggling to keep her marriage afloat, Harriet believes nothing and no one. But as the police bear down on both women trying to piece together the puzzle of what happened to this little girl, dark secrets begin to surfaceand Harriet discovers that confiding in Charlotte again may be the only thing that will reunite her with her daughter.... This breathless and fast-paced debutperfect for fans of Big Little Lies and The Couple Next Doortakes you on a chilling journey that will keep you guessing until the very last page.

I REALLY really enjoyed this one! This is Perks‘ debut but the 2nd I‘ve read of hers. There were definitely some twists in this one! The characters are well developed but some still manage to hold onto secrets. The villain may have been a little cheesy at times in the portrayal but represents a huge issue in relationship dynamics. Perks is an author I will be on the lookout for in the future!

This was a good mystery/thriller to have with me while I was traveling. The beginning had vibes of the Yellow Wallpaper, and the shift in the middle was very Gone Girl reminiscent.

This was a book club pick. And I enjoyed it well enough, but there wasn‘t much depth to it. The biggest discussion points being character relationships and moral choices.

Entertaining, light read good to block out airport/travel misery.

Suspenseful, addicting, page turner. Perks nails all of the requirements for an engrossing unputdownable book. Unlike most authors, she masterfully tells the story from two different POV. She displays a deep understanding of the nuances of mental & emotional partner violence. Family issues, female friendships, crime, love... This book hits them all. Super freaking good book! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Nute Whoa! Sounds sooo good! 4y

Completely breezed through this book. Super easy to get into. Although I did guess the ending partway through, I thought the characters were really well flushed out. The psychological manipulation by one character was really intriguing. I was hoping it would be played up more, creating a question of what is one protagonists true reality. I love when books throw me with whether something is actually happening or it‘s all in a characters head.

Imagine your good friend allows you to watch her 4 year old, in fact the first time she has let anyone watch the girl, and she disappears. This event starts a largely ok thriller. What‘s great about it is the twist and the subtle and less subtle red herrings that I totally fell for. Not a perfect book, but I enjoyed it.

I listened to this mystery. It was easy to get invested into the story of a little girl disappearing from a public play place. The family's backstory was interesting, and I felt genuinely surprised by who did it. After that was revealed, however, there was 20% of the book left of it playing out and wrapping up, which was too long and draggy.

Alice goes missing and a friend that was supposed to have been watching her is subjected to everyone‘s opinion through social media. Don‘t want to give too much away. At first I thought this book would be too terrible to read but it is a good story with believable happenings.

Trying to get caught up on my #Netgalley #arc backlog.
Worst case scenario, a child goes missing from the park when she is there with a mother‘s friend. There are many layers to this and some things I didn‘t see coming. However, it felt a little stale at times. It is still worth the read though.

This was a horrible but I predicted the twist pretty early on, and I didn't really feel any resolution.

I just started this audiobook and 😭💔💔 Loosing a child in a crowded area is one of my biggest fears! I can remember vividly two separate instances where my brother (3 or 4 years old) and my daughter (3 years old) were lost in a department store. I about had a heart attack!! And both times they were just hiding in the clothes racks 😒 So far it‘s a good read!

20 // HER ONE MISTAKE // “I would never take my eyes off my children again. I would never let them run through the trees where I couldn‘t see them or play hide and seek in the sand dunes where the grass was so high it devoured them. I would never trust anyone not to be lurking a breath away from me, ready to snatch my children.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 #heronemistake #jessicareads2019
