Maybe I've already passed by the time in my life where I can read a romance book without groaning with exasperation at the stupidity of the characters. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

The cover is pretty though, isn't it?

This was very much a Beauty and the Beast re-telling with Shen‘s signature a-hole male protag and the female-victim-to-circumstances-beyond-her-control. Set in the 21st-century within the context of Mafia politics and 19th-century social customs (e.g. arranged marriages in the Western world,) you have to suspend disbelief quite a bit, but I don‘t think anyone would confuse this as “real” anyway.

Definitely for Shen fans (and I am one) :-)

This one didn‘t live up to the hype for me. While the premise was intriguing (Mafia princess forced to marry her father‘s enemy), I had a hard time liking any of the characters. I love a fictional arsehole, but Wolfe was just too over the top for me with the crude way he talked about and women and I just couldn‘t move beyond his pompousness or cruelty. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Full of angst and drama, I can see why so many people like LJ Shen. It was a little melodramatic for my taste and not dark at all for involving the mafia. But it was strangely addicting and kept me turning pages.

I'm genuinely flummoxed by the number of 5-star ratings this book has. I was entertained enough but I can't remember the last time a book made me roll my eyes this much 🙄. I gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️ and that feels generous, the extra star is bc for some reason I never felt like bailing. #romantsy

I can‘t describe the emotions this book brings me. I cried, I laughed. Hugged this book so tight.

After the first 20% of it, I flew through this book. There were some parts I just could not deal with and I was mad at both characters through most the book. I didn‘t connect with them very well. However, this was well-written so I‘ll check out her other books.

I just finished reading this and it is a great read. I just loved reading about Fransesca's life and her struggles even though she was a tad bit irritating at points. I mean, what was the obsession of hiding the truth? And not just she, but Wolfe excelled in that, too. Why? 😐

Yet, I loved the book. I'd rate it a 4.5/5 so you just know you can try it out.🤭
