This is a engaging fast paced read cozy read set at a boarding school in England. Though the book has a spooky story, the boarding school has a positive aura which I like about this book. Cute characters & filled with adventure. 4⭐️ 5.5 hrs

My son enjoyed this middle grade gothic mystery as a bedtime story. The kid characters were great.

The mystery of black hollow lane was a really good find, in my opinion kind of reminds me of Harry Potter just with out magic. The characters in the book just felt so real like you have met them in real life and that what made me really like this book. Overall this book is in my top 5 favorite books 10/10

Engaging boarding school mystery about twelve year old Emmy, who's shipped off to a prestigious British school. But her new home is hiding a secret society ... and it may be the answer to Emmy's questions about her missing father.

If you enjoy secret societies hiding among London‘s elite boarding school, then this is for you. I think because that‘s not a story type I enjoy I found the mystery aspects to take forever to happen. The characters where good, and honestly the story is enjoyable, I just wanted faster reveals and more clues.

I read this Mar 1-2 and gave it 4 ⭐️. In a nutshell, it‘s a middle grade mystery set in a British boarding school and a possibly nefarious secret society. I really enjoyed this book. I am certainly picking up the next book.

American girl gets shipped off to an English boarding school. I feel like I should have enjoyed this book more. This will be another #readalsoin2020 I will forget entirely what this book is about soon. A secret society, mysterious messages from an anonymous “friend” and the disappearance or death of her father years earlier. This should have been a gloriously dark MG book. Still worth reading.

Starting Spooktober off right with this deliciously gothic #middlegrade mystery set at a British boarding school. It‘s full of secret societies, family secrets, mysterious symbols, loyal friends, untrustworthy adults, and moody old buildings. Oh, and secrets. 😆 A little predictable, but it delivers on its premise.

Very HP-adjacent, though I could have used some supernatural elements. Quick, give me your best creepy middle grade reads!

yeahnonotagain Loving that cover!! 4y
flying_monkeys Anything by Mary Downing Hahn really. I also quite enjoyed The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud. Skeleton Man by Joseph Bruchac. And the Scary Stories books by Alvin Schwartz. And I have Spirit Hunters by Ellen Oh and The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste on my TBR list. 4y

This assured MG debut is so fantastically fun & well-written it‘s hard to believe it‘s the author‘s first book. Emmy‘s father disappeared when she was 3 & then her mother got so busy being a parenting advise expert, Emmy never saw her either. Shipped off to boarding school, she makes friends & enemies, starts receiving mysterious notes, & learns about a secret society that may have something to do with her father‘s disappearance. Great MG mystery.

SassenachTheBookWizard I loved this one too! Cannot wait for the sequel 5y

It‘s the first day of school tomorrow so to celebrate—and get ready for all the students who will be asking for recommendations—I‘m going to read this MG which has blurbs from Jessica Day George & Michael Buckley (very cool) as well as good reviews. Anticipating a quick, fun read.

This was hella cute! The boarding school + some Malfoy-esque characters + a McGonagall-like teacher + quidditch being football instead + a secret society are all elements that make for a book I am going to like. I feel deprived that I never got to go to a boarding school as a kid. Weird shit always happens at them! See examples: Harry Potter, Truly Devious, this book.
