An utterly delightful, perfect historical romance. Verity Plum is a radical bookseller whose childhood friend Ash, an engraver, has come to board with her. Their friendship and intellectual connection teeter on the edge of romantic love/lust. But when Ash--who always assumed he was illegitimate--discovers he's the heir to a duke, it drives a wedge between them. Superb writing! Fascinating historical details! Plus, Verity is prominently bisexual!

You know, ignorant people say romance writers don't write well, but the first page of this book has the delightful and clever phrase "the emotional equivalent of gout." I love it.

This book sold me on Cat so hard. Flirting through sedition. Angry cat whisperer. A man fully supporting his love's autonomy. Said man having some sub leanings. Just read this book because it is beautifully written. Okay? #romantsy

Verity wrote a four-page tirade on the merits of spinsterhood, the urgent need to reform divorce law, and the benefits that would devolve to all by banning men from the public sphere.

She feared this would not be a suitable answer ...but she found it moderately cathartic.

I've seen this described as Cat Sebastian's first "traditional" historical, which I think does it a big disservice. Yes it's her first “traditional" m/f but to reduce this book to that is to underplay what Sebastian is trying to do. All I can hope is that that descriptor will tempt readers who haven't yet read Sebastian because they "don't do" lgtbqi+ romances to try Sebastian's work and see what they're missing. Because this is really great.

On the one hand the pacing is kind of weird, but on the other hand the hero sees the heroine wearing a hat and is so shocked by this turn of events that he just mouths "hat" at her, so it's a pick.

I would give this 3.5🌟
The pacing is slow and the descriptions of various things a bit too exacting making the book tedious at times, so it took me far longer to finish then the author‘s previous books. I do like the characters and it is a fresh take on the Duke hero trope. FYI, the cover makes no sense for these characters, she would never wear that gown. #romantsy

I‘ve spent most of the day binging Netflix, now for some reading into the night. Will probably stay up to finish this one. Started slow but now getting good!

Just finished my last book of March. It was a good month. I gave six books 5 stars.

Friends to lovers romance with a wee bit of sedition and Perkin Warbeck slash-fic. What‘s not to love?

If you were hoping for a little Pembroke-and-Robin action, they don‘t appear as characters here, although Mrs Allenby and Amelia appear as wonderful additions to this story. This narrative is almost parallel to that of Unmasked by the Marquess.
